A letter from a simpler time. 1966 — directed to the then foreman of Salt Creek Ranch. 60 years ago, cattle thieves were still a very real concern in Texas. With higher beef prices, they may be again.

Dry conditions can create intense fire behavior, as seen here. When fine fuels are cured and humidity is low, fire moves fast and burns hot. That is exactly why careful planning, experienced crews, and strong firebreaks are critical in a prescribed burn program.

Fire is a powerful tool on the South Texas prairie, but it demands respect. With the right preparation and partnerships, we can use it safely to reduce fuel loads and improve rangeland health.

A successful prescribed burn like the one yesterday takes planning, discipline, and teamwork.

We are thankful to partner with our local volunteer fire departments as part of our prescribed burn program here at Salt Creek Ranch. Lamar Volunteer Fire Department, Refugio Volunteer Fire Department, Tivoli Volunteer Fire Department, Fulton and Rockport Volunteer Fire Departments, and many others locally.

Their experience, equipment, and steady presence add an extra layer of safety and professionalism to every burn. Together, we reduce wildfire fuel loads, improve native grass response, and steward this land responsibly for the next generation.

We are proud to work alongside neighbors who understand both fire and the value of protecting our community.

Our planned agricultural burn for today has been deferred due to unfavorable weather conditions and will be rescheduled.
