We’ve greatly enjoyed our temporary landscaping crew from the FFA Students at the Northwest Junior Livestock show. This morning they left the farm for freezer camp and we are already missing their shenanigans. Thank you to the Buckley Culinary Center for partnering with us to support FFA. Appreciated the halal harvest education from A&L Slaughtering and your care and kindness means that the hard days are a little easier.

Our newest farm co-worker Sweet Pea is getting busy mowing the lawn.

In case your wondering this also comes with the perk of living in the house and being bottle feed on demand. She’s considering more social media to document the day in a life of a lamb on the farm. Would you find this entertaining?

Are we organic? Sounds simple I thought it was before we started farming?

It’s expensive kudos to our farm friends who are. We believe in a circular economy and love keeping food out of the waste stream. And it means much less fruit and veggie because at the scale we need food for them it’s hard to source. Finding and hauling to organic harvest and getting a slot is incredibly hard unless we are willing to go a long way. Plus it more than doubles the cost and we aren’t seeing enough consumer demand for $20 a dozen eggs and $40lb pork, beef, and lamb. Thanks for listening to our farmer moment. Ask more questions and we will share all the things we don’t know before we started this journey.

Are we organic? It seems like a simple yes or no but for our small farm it isn’t quite that simple.

We’ve had several phone calls, personal chats, texts and emails. On the last month so let’s have a minute to chat….

I buy local and organic when we can. We can taste the difference. Chemicals make our family sick we don’t have scents in our home.

Nope we are NOT certified organic. Yet we strong believe in organic and are in the organic mentoring program. We qualify as a farm to be organic. We admire the farm who are and if we reach a point we can afford to certify we will.

BUT did you know that means then animals can’t have the yummy fruits and veggie treats because their isn’t enough for us to source organic at the volume we need. I can’t tell them no watermelon.🍉

Each step in the supply chain has to be certified or we can’t label it. AND that means extra hauling time to processors likely out of state, our vendors all need to certify and they aren’t.

We will keep being pesticide free. We admire the farms that are organic it’s lots of paperwork, time and money that frankly our small operation doesn’t have yet. Maybe in a few years this will be our next thing but right now it doesn’t make sense. Farming is tough thanks for understanding that this ain’t something we can tackle YET.

As we close out another month, we just want to say: thank you.

Thank you to everyone who’s shopped the online store, shared our posts, told a friend, or just taken a moment to think about where your food comes from. That kind of attention is what keeps places like ours going. We get to launch deliver service on Monday because of our supporters it’s a BIG step and we can’t say THANK YOU enough

We’re grateful to be part of this community, and genuinely excited about what’s coming next. Stay tuned, and come see us next Friday for Growing Good at Moms Micro Garden and Urban Farm 8217 Riverside Drive E Sumner, WA 98390 gps to Windmill Gardens
