10 Sad But True Facts About Chicken Keeping
Chicken keeping is one of the most rewarding hobbies out there, but it’s not always sunshine, fluffy chicks, and baskets full of eggs.
A few hard truths every chicken keeper should know:
1.) Chickens can pass away suddenly, even when they seemed perfectly fine the day before.
2.) Predators are always looking for an opportunity. Hawks, raccoons, foxes, weasels, dogs, and more can wipe out a flock in a matter of minutes.
3.) Chickens are masters at hiding illness. By the time they show obvious signs, they’re often very sick.
4.) The pecking order is real, and chickens can be surprisingly mean to weak or injured flockmates.
5.) If you’re hatching eggs or buying straight-run chicks, expect a rooster or two (or ten 😆).
6.) Hens don’t lay forever. As they age, egg production slows down, but they still deserve the same love and care.
7.)They are messy. If you’ve owned chickens, you know exactly what I mean.
8.) Finding a poultry vet isn’t always easy, and treatment can sometimes cost more than people expect.
9.) Heat and cold can be deadly if birds aren’t given the proper setup and care.
10.) Chickens have personalities. They form bonds, and when you lose one, it hurts more than most people understand.
Chicken keeping is amazing, but it’s important to understand both the good and the difficult parts of the hobby. The highs are incredible, but the lows are very real too.
