Five “moderate discriminations” according to the PDCA Showmanship Evaluation Card that showmanship judges are taking into account when evaluating your presentation! Including one that is NEW in 2025.

1) Crowding or bumping other animals when pulled into line.
2) Failure to maintain a straight line up.
3) Sidesteps when leading. *NEW
4) Leading too slowly.
5) Is too far to the outside or inside of the ring.

And a big thank you to the talented group of youth out in Eddy Co. New Mexico for the opportunity to judge your show! You all put in the hard work at home and your efforts definitely showed up in the ring!

- 2025 Revised Showmanship Guidelines Updates Continued

Judge asks you to switch animals ... here is what to do, including the new 2025 update from the PDCA Showmanship Guidelines:

1) Efficiently walk to your new animal.
2) Take a quick moment - QUICK - to assess your new animal to understand strengths and weaknesses.
3) Take the halter and make sure animal is set up correctly.
4) When you get back to your own animal, no need to inspect. You already know strengths and weaknesses. Just make sure animal is set up correctly.

Thank you Idaho Youth Expo for the opportunity to judge your show! Impressive cattle with outstanding youth! Always inspiring to see so much passion from young exhibitors!

Did you hear?! The PDCA released revised showmanship guidelines in 2025! Summer county fairs are in full swing. Make sure you are up to date!

Revision #1:
What to do with your hands?!

There is a technique for holding a show halter to give you control, adaptability if the animal’s temperament changes, and, of course, a tidy aesthetic.

Straight from the PDCA revised 2025 Showmanship Guidelines

1) Your left hand or part of the hand is under the chain and around the ring, but fingers are not through the ring.

2) Hold the lead strap in the left or right hand (whichever gives you the most control) using approximately three small loops (not tightly coiled or looped and fastened) so that the lead strap does not rub the animal’s eye or is visible from the right side.

HOT TAKE: If you are comfortable pulling throat, which older showmanship ages should be, take a stab at holding both the halter and the neatly looped strap with only your left hand. Pull throat to the side with your right hand.
