Today was graduation day. Weanling goats graduated to the yearling pasture after a 2 week trial of grasses only, no milk. They all passed. So now we have 20 growing kids in the yearling pasture. As soon as the weanling paddock was cleared out, more babies graduated into it. They are on milk but also starting to eat grasses and grain supplements pretty well. They will go down to one milk serving a day to encourage them to eat foods that will develop a healthy rumen. These are the last set of bottle babies, 3 Oberhasli dairy kids, and one late Boer kid. Baby season is passing fast.

Two new little bucklings! We got home from our rodeo travels just in time. She is put up in a kidding pen with her babies, and will stay here for a few weeks to ensure a good bond, and give mama a good start on milk production without having to jockey for a feed dish, or tussle for hay. She will be the queen in her own castle. This is actually an unusual time to have goats kidding, but I intentionally bred in the off season because I am planning to have premium, fresh products available year-round. No break in my supply is my goal.

Our rodeo days up in the mountains were extended. We won't be at the market today or tomorrow. So sorry to all our customers. Will be back next week. I will be processing more chicken this coming week, so we will have fresh frozen whole and pieced chicken. Thank you to our faithful customers!

My son is back on US soil!! Almost 11 months out to sea. His wife's face says it all! Thank you, you too!

This is a long video, but it's Anya, trying out for Arizona State High School Rode Queen. She is a partner in our business, AV-Bar Works, and y'all see her at the markets. She is the one who bakes the amazing cookies, fudge and cheesy garlic & herb bread. This is her other side. She is quite a horsewoman and rodeo ambassador. She did great at the contest; this is her horsemanship pattern on a horse named Creature, from the Rain Valley Ranch. If you are lucky enough to have one of these dogs, a livestock guardian (LGD), and you are able to give them a little orientation when young, you won't have to worry about predator losses. These guys are on-the-job here in the laying hen compound, and I don't worry at night anymore. Before these 2 arrived, we lost a hundred chickens in about 3 years. Bobcats and coyotes are so sneaky, and so driven. We tried everything. We even had guardians around the outside of the 5 acre compound and put a roof over every one of the 5 separate hen houses. Nothing would work! They woupld trick the dogs, then get over the perimeter fence and feast away, with the dogs unable to get to them. So these 2 boys saved the day. Coy and Yote (get it? coyote... 😃) are the best! They came here from the city of LA. They had out grown their city home, and needed jobs. They were 11 months old and had started some behavioral issues. This breed comes with solid instincts to protect and to work. They are tough and smart. But if they have nothing to do, they will get into trouble. They also need to prowl and bark at night, it's just in their DNA. They never want to be inside. They just struggle in a city home. I've actually adopted 8 of this breed, all from homes where they were causing troubles. And every last one of them became a treasured farm guardian with a little bit of time and patience.
Anyway, Coy and Yote are a big pair. Over 100 lbs each. They are gentle giants, until a night invader thinks about messing with their hens.

Currently in the weaning stage for the second set of goat babies of this year, but here comes the third round. My breeding program changed for the first time in 30 years. Usually I breed once a year in the late summer, early fall to have January or February babies. Not this year! Because I am trying to prepare to have premium fresh goat meat supplies year-round, I have to stagger the breeding. I have to hold the does in a separate pen, because my buck is a perfect gentleman, and I let him live with his herd year-round. When I am ready to breed a doe, I simply put her back in the breeding pen. He takes care of the rest. So there are currently 3 does that will kid over the next 4 weeks. That will make these offspring ready for market next December, January. So far it's working pretty good. My breeding herd consists of a buck, "Screech", and 8 mature does, and 2 yearling does that will be ready for breeding in August. I also have 3 doelings that will be ready to join the breeding herd next fall. That will complete the herd, and should meet my supply goals; I want to have 80 lbs of sausage every month for the market.

Cornish cross chickens are kind of mind-blowing! It's really amazing that a weightless chick, a ball of fuzz, can grow into a 12 lb beast of a chicken in just 9 short weeks. As a food source, that's invaluable. And when they are fed clean, chemical free food, and grazed on natural grass and bugs, you have an ideal set up for plentiful, clean food.
