✨Lambing✨
Well, we are one week in, and we feel a little shell shocked. Here is what we learned so far.
1. Ewes can give birth to singles, twins or triplets. So far, ours have all had twins.
2. Ewes will sometimes reject their babies. We watched it happen, and it’s so hard. Thankfully, one of the other ewes became the surrogate.
3. Ewes will inevitably give birth when you are not around. The 3 that have given birth so far have been at dusk or dawn. On the coldest and rainiest nights too.
4. You need shelter, guardian dogs or both. We lost a lamb last night. Just gone. We think coyotes, but it was a painful lesson. Farm life is not for sissies. Tonight, however, moms and babies are locked up in the barn.
5. You will miss out on sleep. Plowing through the rain and mud to get the babies into a shelter was an event The Farmer and I will never forget.
6. Farming friends are just a text away to offer an encouraging word and a wealth of information. Looking at you
7. The Farmer and I are learning and growing through this experience.
