Rose Cattle Farm

Rose Cattle Farm We strive to raise our cattle in a low stress farming environment.

We specialize in raising American Wagyu utilizing ethical farming practices that lower stress and promote animal welfare, which in turn enhances marbling, tenderness and flavor. Rose Cattle Farm is a third generation Kansas farming operation located between Tonganoxie and Lawrence. We specialize in raising cattle free of growth hormones and limit our use of antibiotics. We feel it is our responsibility to handle the beef raised on our farm humanely, but also our responsibility to the consumer.

We start our American Wagyu on feed as soon as they’re weaned. Wagyu beef starts developing the intermuscular marbling when they’re young. If they’re not on grain, they don’t make those fat deposits they’re famous for. Bonus is that it’s primarily the monounsaturated fat that is found in olive oil and avocados! These our the calves from last fall enjoying tonight’s meal!

The steers have been moved home to the feedlot. For the next 60 to 120 days they will eat us out of house and home 😂. Each steer eats around 25 pounds of grain daily. Multiply by 8 and that’s about 3 ton each month. They have been on some grain ever since they were weaned last April. We start them off at around 4/lbs a day (along with grass pasture) and then gradually increase the amount as they grow.

Farming always has its challenges. Last year army worms invaded some of our hay fields and did an immense amount of damage before I was able to get them sprayed. This field was one of the best brome fields we own. This year it’s full of cheatgrass. We’ve mowed the cheat and it looks like the brome is trying to make a come back. Hopefully it will recover and we won’t need to replant. It’s aways a challenge 🧑‍🌾🐮

Thanks go out to the students from Tonganoxie High School who volunteered today to help clean up Pony Creek Cemetery located on our farm for their community service day. It’s been neglected for a long time and they made quick work removing lots of brush and many of the gooseberry bushes (very thorny bushes I might add). There’s still more to do, but it was such a big help.

There are a few stressful times of the year for the farmer, the calves and the cows. Weaning time is one of them. We use fence line weaning to reduce stress as much as possible. The cows and calves can still touch, the calves just cannot nurse. Professionals say it takes about 14-days for the bond to be broken. I don’t know about that—the cows seem to know when their daughters are brought back into the herd after being separated by several years as the heifers mature.

ISO a couple hard working young men to roll up some old barb wire. This isn’t a huge job, but would take between 4 to 8 hours. Trying to get the old fence removed before the hay field starts growing. I’ve done some already, but running out of time. This will be just east of Tonganoxie.

The freezer is nearly empty which means we are nearly sold out of our American Wagyu beef for now (next harvest is August). You can find prices and quantities at Rosecattlefarm.com. We do have one (1) brisket that’s not on the website. It weighs 10 pounds and would make for a delicious Easter meal. Please let us know if you need anything.
