FLOWER OF THE WEEK: VERBENA 💜

In the Victorian language of flowers, verbena—or vervain—carried the meaning of enchantment.

It’s a fitting meaning for a flower that seems to float above the field. Verbena bonariensis grows on tall, wiry stems crowned with tiny violet blossoms, adding movement, texture and a little wildness wherever it goes.

Long before the Victorians assigned it a place in floriography, vervain was surrounded by stories of ritual, divination and peacemaking.

Our verbena is just beginning to bloom, and we’re excited to start sharing this airy, magical flower.

Wildfires & Flowers

A hazy summer evening in Chicago. The wildfire smoke turned the sun red, but the flowers still brought plenty of color to the city. 🌸🌇

Flower of the Week: Matricaria 🤍🌼

Tiny, cheerful, and far tougher than it looks.

In Floriography, Jessica Roux gives chamomile the meaning “energy in adversity”—a nod to its long association with calm, rest, healing, and renewal during difficult times.

The flower blooming here at Ryan Farm Flowers is matricaria, often called feverfew in the floral trade. It grows in airy clouds of little white-and-gold blooms, adding light, movement, and a touch of wildness to every bouquet.

My sister gave me this beautiful book, and I have a feeling it may inspire quite a few more Flowers of the Week.

Flower of the week: Chinese Forget-Me-Not 🌸

Tiny little blooms, big romantic energy.

These soft pink-lavender stems are one of the sweetest things coming out of the field right now — airy, delicate, a little wild, and perfect tucked into a summer bouquet. Forget-me-nots have always carried that old-school meaning of remembrance, affection, and “don’t forget me,” which feels pretty perfect for a flower stand in the park.

We’ll be selling fresh local flowers in Chicago parks all week. Come build your own bouquet, or I’ll happily make one for you.

This week:
Tuesday — Oz Park / Lincoln Park, 4–7
Wednesday — Bartelme Park / West Loop, 4–7
Thursday — Washington Square Park / Gold Coast, 4–7
Friday — Connors Park / Gold Coast, 8–12

Check our stories each day for updates, weather changes, and exact setup spots. 🌼

Chicago, we’re back. 🌺
The field is officially exploding with flowers, and we can’t hold onto them all anymore — so it’s time to bring them back to the city and share the wealth.

I’ll be at Washington Square Park in the Gold Coast today from 4–7 PM with fresh-cut flowers from our farm in Tonica, IL.

Come grab some of the freshest blooms of the season — first city flower run of the year.

See you in the park,
Ryan Farm Flowers
