Happy Friday from all of us at Hen & Harvest! 🥚🌞

Did you know that chickens can recognize over 100 different faces—including both people and other chickens? 👀 They remember who treats them well and can even come running when they see their favorite person!

🎥 Maybe one day soon I’ll record a video of these ladies coming running and following me around. It’s one of my favorite things to watch, and it’s proof they really do know who I am! ❤️

🐔🥚 Chicken Myth Monday! 🥚🐔

MYTH: A double-yolk egg means twins! 🐣🐣

FACT: Not quite! A double-yolk egg happens when a hen releases two yolks at nearly the same time, and they both end up in one shell. It’s most common in young hens whose egg-laying systems are still getting into a rhythm.

While double-yolk eggs are perfectly safe to eat, they’re also a fun surprise to crack open! Some people even believe they’re a symbol of good luck. 🍀

The loud booms and bright flashes may startle backyard flocks, causing them to become anxious or even take a short break from laying eggs. The good news? Most hens are back to their normal routine once the excitement is over.

If you have backyard chickens this Independence Day, be sure they have a safe, secure coop to roost in before the fireworks begin.

🥚 Farm Fresh Egg Facts 🥚

Did you know that fresh eggs are naturally coated with a protective layer called the “bloom”?

The bloom helps seal the shell and protect the egg from bacteria. When eggs are washed, that natural protective coating is removed.

🐔 Unwashed Eggs
• Retain their natural bloom
• Many homesteaders choose to store them at room temperature for a limited time or refrigerate them for longer storage

🐔 Washed Eggs
• Have had the bloom removed
• Should be refrigerated

For the longest shelf life, many backyard chicken keepers leave eggs unwashed until they are ready to use them. When it’s time to wash an egg, use warm water and avoid soap.

🥚 Hen & Harvest Update (with a little oops!) 🥚

Well… it finally happened. It looks like one of our “helpers” got a little too involved in egg production. Somehow, a green ceramic nest egg (pic below) has gone rogue and snuck its way into a carton that was SOLD.

If you crack open your dozen and find a mystery green egg that refuses to cooperate… congratulations, you’ve officially found the golden egg!

Prize: One FREE dozen eggs from our very real, very hardworking girls 🐓

No yolk… we mean joke.
