The B-Irv Garden

The B-Irv Garden is a small, family run, first generation garden and greenhouse. We classify ourselves as a "tiny urban farm".

We provide our community with locally grown seedlings, tulip bouquets, fall mums, and farm fresh veggies.

Some bittersweet news: This will be our last regular Sunday of veggies at our stand (We may have one or two more "pop ups" in September). We usually go through most of September but we have a few projects that involve redoing our garden beds for more efficient growing next season.

We are also going to focus our efforts primarily on growing our mums throughout September, and we need to make more room in our limited area to space our plant out. We will have them ready for everyone at the end of the month!

That being said, our self-serve veggie stand will be opening at today at noon until sunset (or out of veggies)

Thanks for another great veggie season and allowing us to continue to serve our community!

The mums are coming along nicely and making great growing progress despite having one of the driest summers ever.

It has definitely been a struggle keeping these moisture loving plants watered, often times having to do it morning and afternoon.

We are aiming to have these ready in about 4 to 5 weeks, just in time for the fall season!

Our large farm and garden display didn't do as well as we had hoped, BUT we were unexpectedly surprised to learn that we won a best of show award for our dill pickles!

Each one of our 6 of our entries placed this year:

Large Farm and Garden collection: 2nd place
Dill Pickles: 1st place and Best of Show in Canning.
Dilly Beans: 1st place
Collection of 3 Pickles: 1st place
Canned Goods Other (garlic scapes): 3rd place
Maple Syrup: 1st place

All and all we had a great showing and we took home our third Best of Show ribbon, and four more blue ribbons to add to our collection.

The mums are progressing along nicely amd putting on some decent foliage. We are estimating to have these ready at the end of next month!

This years entry into the Topsham Fair exhibition hall for large farm and garden collection. It had to follow the this year's hall theme of "the wonderful world of poultry" (hence all the chicken related decor). We also entered a few canned goods that we had recently made. We'll see how we did in the next couple of days. 🤞

Garlic is harvested and will be curing in the greenhouse for the next couple of weeks! 🧄

One of the not so glorious tasks of the garden is pest removal. However, they are part of the natural ecosystem which includes beneficial predatory insects/spiders, pollinators, birds, worms, etc. They all need to be present to have a thriving garden. Also another reason why we do not use any chemicals/pesticides/synthetics.

However, sometimes the good guys need a little assistance. Amanda has been keeping the squash bugs at bay this season, picking them off by hand and using duct tape to remove the little eggs these pesky guys leave on our cucurbit plants! 🩷
