We will NOT be at the market tomorrow, due to the cold and windy conditions. Our little seedlings (and even greens) aren't built for that - but what do you do if you've already planted your seedlings?

Protection from the wind is most important, which can be achieved as simply as putting a laundry basket with a large rock on top over larger plants. Covering with row cover or even a blanket with weighted down edges will keep tender crops safe and warm.

HOWEVER ...

You can still shop for seedlings out at the farm! We will be open in the afternoon on Saturday for sales, we are fully stocked on tomatoes, peppers, squash, cukes, flowers, herbs...

And if you really just wanted a bag of arugula or mustard mix or some big orange carrots, downtown has them!

It's TIME!!! The farm is officially OPEN for seedling sales for the 2026 planting season! 7am-7pm, 7 days a week! This weekend you'll find LOTS of perennial herbs, a veritable sea of 4 packs of greens, onions, leeks and other alliums, early flowers galore, basil, beans and peas, some cucumbers and squash, and....TOMATOES!!! Note that this is only one of four rounds of tomato seedlings, so you'll have plenty of chances to pick up your favorites on the farm or at our markets! Stay tuned for more (Peppers! Eggplants! Husk cherries! Melons! You get the idea!) as things continue to warm up outside.

Things are growing quickly in our tunnels as well! We have an absolute haul of lettuce mix, arugula, mustard mix, baby kale, SPINACH, and the return of the Asian mix! We've also got some sizable bok choi and the first few bunches of little radishes. Come brave the rain downtown on the mall at the from 8-1, or enjoy the sunshine on Saturday at the market at .me from 8:30-12:30.

What a week! This Tuesday, Ben was honored with the Mad Farmer Award from the , recognizing his unique and important role in the community, and the history of farming (or attempts at it) by the Whatley family on this land. Included in the celebration was a feast of farm recipes, a mouse-shaped pinata, and this incredible model of our one and only "brown truck," Ben's faithful companion since college.

We did our first couple rounds of planting with the new water wheel transplant system. Pretty cushy compared to kneeling in the mud! Kal and Claire are seen here planting kale and cabbage, and we plugged in kohlrabi, chard and bok choy once things dried out a little from the rain.

And SPEAKING of both farm recipes and cabbage, we've still got some storage cabbage rattling around, so Anna made a social-media-hype-inspired version of cabbage caramelized with butter and miso and tossed with pasta, but added shallot and fresh herbs for a farm-inspired twist. Come by and pick up ingredients to try it before you're stuck waiting for the babies in the field to mature!

We will be at the from 8-1 Friday and the market from 8:30-12:30 Saturday. More seedling varieties are available each market (tomatoes are still at least a week off!) and our on farm seedling sales may begin as early as next week, so keep your eyes peeled!

It's outdoor market kickoff weekend!!! We're so excited to be back on the mall downtown for the this Friday (and the following Tuesdays and Fridays) from 8-1 and out at beautiful .me from 8:30-12:30 on Saturday for the market!

Did you know we accept WIC payments, in addition to market-wide accepted SNAP and Senior Farm Share programs? WIC participants can download the BNFT app for a payment barcode. Feeding EVERYONE is why we farm so we participate in every benefit program we can, in addition to regularly donating to .

And speaking of eating more fruits and vegetables, we've still got lots of tasty red beets in storage and here's a fun way to use them: beet chorizo! A great addition to burritos, nachos, chili, or with goat cheese.

See you outside! 🫜

Onions, onions, onions! 🧅🧅🧅 We have a LOT of lovely onions in storage to move and are running a sale, $3/lb red and yellow onions. Looking for a fun new way to use those onions? Try making a batch of onion jam! It's sweet, it's savory, it's got stout in it! Put it on toast, a burger, grilled cheese...let us know how you like to eat it if you try it.

This week is the LAST of the season, so come on by and stock up before we change gears to outdoor markets (yes, PLURAL) next week and start the seedling season.

Hey garlic lovers! If you haven't uncovered your garlic yet, now's the time! We recently removed the straw from our planting of garlic, since the dark soil will absorb more heat from the (stronger every day!) sun than the straw covering it would. In just a couple months we will be harvesting fresh garlic scapes for eating and making pesto! Have you tried our garlic scape pesto? Vegan and nut free, sure it's good on pasta, but we asked the crew how they like to use it around the kitchen and got a whole list of ideas together! There's plenty of 2025 pesto still frozen for you to bring home at the this weekend!

Wondering what else to fill your garden with this year? If you're on our email list, check your inbox for our updated planting guide and seedling book! Some new varieties and lots of old favorites are coming to the outdoor markets before you know it!

Another dispatch from the greenhouse this week - we potted up our peppers! While people know Whatley Farm for many things, we still very much consider ourselves the pepper people. Sweet, hot, dried, roasted - there are so many kinds and so many ways to enjoy them! We're still several weeks away from pepper planting time, and several months from peak pepper season, but our frozen roasted peppers keep us going through the rest of the year.

With warmer days in the forecast, Anna decided we could use a frozen treat and made this roasted green chile ice cream. The subtle heat from the peppers reminds us that it's only getting warmer out there. If you don't have an ice cream maker, the has newly acquired one for their Library of Things, and it's worth picking up a pack of peppers and joining the wait list!

Come get some frozen roasted goodness this weekend at the ! We have greens, roots and garlic scape pesto, too.

Unsung heroes of the farm: kohlrabi!

We've got some lovely purple kohlrabi starts almost ready to go into our first tunnel planting of the spring, which we will sell bunched with their delicious greens. Until then, we've still got some big beautiful green storage kohlrabi, which is perfect for a light veggie noodle treatment (think zoodles, but in the off season). Sweet kohlrabi is particularly nice with salty peanuts, and a simple peanut miso sauce (use tahini if you don't do peanut butter) coats the "noodles" in delicious savory goodness. Don't forget to pick up a container of garlic scape pesto for the sauce!

Come see us and our kohlrabi at the tomorrow!

Lots going on this week at the farm!

Make sure to sign up for our email newsletter (link in bio) for some coverage from Ben of the local food systems discussion at the yesterday!

Meanwhile, greenhouse manager Anna and her volunteer assistant, Mary (who was Anna's fourth grade and favorite teacher, small world!) potted up the first round of greenhouse tomato seedlings. Why do we pot up tomatoes? Tomatoes germinate best in a warm, moist environment, meaning our germination chamber, and we simply can't fit a bunch of full pots in there! It also gives us an opportunity to assess their growth at a glance - a variety that's struggling and may need reseeding is easier to see. Plus, the plants get an extra boost of fresh compost in the potting mix when they get to stretch their little leggies in their fresh new pots. And speaking of leggy, it helps control legginess in plants, since tomatoes form adventitious roots from their stems and can be buried up to their lower seedling leaves. Now they'll grow big and strong, stay tuned for transplanting updates sometime in the next few weeks!

Despite the busy week, Anna still had time to throw together a tasty little snacking cake made with rutabaga, determined to make as many things as possible from one vegetable. Come see us at the tomorrow and pick one up to try it!
