You know you’re doing things right when the next generation of Blue Ameraucana hens lay even darker eggs than their moms!

Years of carefully selecting breeding stock, making thoughtful pairings, and a little patience are finally paying off. There’s nothing more exciting than opening the nest box and seeing those rich, beautiful colors getting even better with each generation.

That’s what progress looks like!

This is my favorite part about selling baby chicks! Some are naturally photogenic and others just don’t corporate.

My Olive Egger hen apparently wakes up every morning and chooses a new paint color. One day she’s laying soft sage green, the next it’s mint blue, then suddenly olive with freckles like she’s trying to impress a panel of egg judges. At this point I’m convinced collecting eggs is less “farm chore” and more “daily surprise art exhibit.” The only thing predictable about this hen is that she refuses to be predictable.

Here’s one more course from Kalmbach. I haven’t taken this course yet.

Whether you're new to chickens or looking to level up your flock knowledge, this self-paced course is designed to guide you through every stage of your hens’ laying journey.

I was chatting with a friend tonight about baby chicks (because let’s be honest… when am I not talking about chicks?), and it reminded me of a course I took from Kalmbach Feeds.

I ended up sharing it with her because I actually really enjoyed it—and even picked up a few new things along the way. Not bad for something I thought I already had mostly figured out!

It got me thinking… there is always more to learn in this whole homesteading life. Whether it’s chickens, gardening, or figuring out how to keep animals from outsmarting you on a daily basis.

So now I’m curious—what courses, books, or resources have you found helpful when it comes to raising animals or homesteading? I’m always looking to learn something new

Raising Healthy Chicks 101 is designed to introduce learners to owning and raising backyard chickens. The course is especially designed to help you raise healthy chickens from their first days of life to their egg laying days.

My favorite thing about homesteading is the rhythm of it all. Feeding the animals each day and, in return, being greeted by them like I’m the best part of theirs. Watching the sun rise over the pasture and set at the end of a long day never gets old. There’s something deeply satisfying about working hard, going to bed exhausted, and still feeling completely fulfilled by what you accomplished. But more than anything, it’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly where my food comes from and the care that went into it.
