Peony season is a beautiful, amazing smelling season. Wish it was longer.
Peony arrangements that are part of our BEST OF BIG Roots subscriptions are going out this week 😍

Quick mention: peonies will likely come still in this small marshmallow bloom form and you will get to enjoy watching them in every form as they slowly open and show off. So don’t be alarmed if the beauty isn’t quite what you thought yet. It will be 💗

If I have extras, I will sell wrapped bunches up at the Squatch on Saturday morning, so watch for any sales there. I wish I could say I will have way more than needed with ~30 2nd year plants on the farm. But the bud blast hit them hard and we lost way over half of our buds that were forming. Next season I will be more prepared for our late cold snaps and hard freezes.

We are about 90% planted here at the flower farm 🥳😵‍💫
All that’s left is some dahlias, sunflowers, some leftover seedlings, basil and our zinnia seeds from the homeschool project we have going on from last season.
We will also have some succession plantings of sunflowers and gladiolus that will go through June to spread bloom time out on those

What a wild May 😮‍💨 And with May ending, we head right into peony season 💗🌸

We kind of skipped right over ranunculus 😭 as they just did horribly here on the farm this year. I made a mistake of overwatering right before some cold cloudy weather and lost over half of them to just being too soggy for too long. Then as the weather fluctuated so hard I think the heat this last week told them they were done before I even got to see any blooms out of them. I will have to evaluate whether I want to attempt them again or not next year.

Nonetheless the flowers that are growing are looking great! Now for some support netting as everything is starting to lengthen good.

Ok but I did mow around it last time. So it must not be important if it’s still there 🤷🏼‍♀️

Now that our Mother’s Day sale is behind us, mothers were celebrated and this mother 🙋🏼‍♀️ took a day to relax, today has brought the other half of busy season on the farm. The first half being tulip season. The second half being planting season.

Hardening my flowers off. Today was pretty windy, but I had most of my little seedlings prepared for it with higher fan speeds as they grew. Only because I know how our springs can be here. Hard to even find the right time to get them used to the outside otherwise.
Planting some that have already been hardened off.
Finishing preparing the flower beds.
And pushing the limits to what I can get done in a day.

We don’t commit to anything other than soccer which is already scheduled, plans for what to do each day change according to weather, and I keep a notebook by my bed incase I think of something to be done and don’t want to get up and put on anymore steps for the day to get my regular notebook😆

Hi flower friends — and hello to all our new faces 👋🌸
I realized it’s time to properly reintroduce myself and the heart behind our little flower farm.
I’m Nicole, the grower and flower lover behind BIG Roots Family Farm, and my husband and kids are my steady behind-the-scenes helpers who help keep this place running. Our farm name isn’t just catchy — BIG comes from the initials of our three kids, who are truly the reason that we started and the roots of everything we do here.
What started as an idea to start a business as a stay at home mom who homeschools her kids and of course a love for growing has grown into a family-run flower farm focused on seasonal, farm-fresh blooms grown with care. From you-pick days and flower subscriptions to funeral, birthday and wedding flowers, everything we grow is rooted in intention and a whole lot of joy, failures, learning and growth.

I believe flowers have a way of slowing life down, bringing people together, and creating meaningful moments — whether you’re cutting your own bouquet or sharing one with someone you love.
If you’re new here, welcome 🤍 We’re so glad you found us, and we can’t wait to share another season of blooms with you.

Comment below - if you could only pick one flower to fill your home with, would it be dahlias or tulips?? 🌷

More seeds going in some dirt 🌱

Lisianthus takes quite a long time to grow before it’s ready to be planted outside. I tried growing it from seed last year and… let’s just say it was a learning experience 😅 So this year I have plugs ordered as a backup. I wanted to test a few new colors out in the field, so I figured I’d give starting from seed another try.

The only other annual (for our zone) flower I grow that takes this long from seed is eucalyptus. I didn’t grow it last year, and since it was part of my very first season, I had quite a few people asking for it. So we’re testing it out again this year and seeing how it goes!
