“What is the difference between RN1 and RN2? Do they present differently?” 💭
Horses with Roan may appear alike visually, but they do not all test for the same type of allele. Roan horses can carry RN1, RN2, even both haplotypes (Yes we have seen horses with RN1/RN2 results)! Additionally, each allele has been linked to different bloodlines.
🧬 Roan 1 (RN1) is prevalent in a wide array of breeds and was found in Red Man’s bloodline, whose line includes Blue Valentine and Mr. Roan Hancock, which goes back to the Burnett Mare.
🧬 Roan 2 (RN2) is prevalent in several breeds as well, and specifically found in Peptoboonsmal, Metallic Cat, and Royal Blue Boon’s bloodlines, who all go back to Orals Kitten and the Burns Mare.
Fun Fact: There are still approximately 30% of Roan samples that are not yet identified, which gives us reason to believe there are still more Roan alleles to be discovered (stay tuned)!!! 👀
