“What is the difference between RN1 and RN2? Do they present differently?” 💭

Horses with Roan may appear alike visually, but they do not all test for the same type of allele. Roan horses can carry RN1, RN2, even both haplotypes (Yes we have seen horses with RN1/RN2 results)! Additionally, each allele has been linked to different bloodlines.

🧬 Roan 1 (RN1) is prevalent in a wide array of breeds and was found in Red Man’s bloodline, whose line includes Blue Valentine and Mr. Roan Hancock, which goes back to the Burnett Mare.

🧬 Roan 2 (RN2) is prevalent in several breeds as well, and specifically found in Peptoboonsmal, Metallic Cat, and Royal Blue Boon’s bloodlines, who all go back to Orals Kitten and the Burns Mare.

Fun Fact: There are still approximately 30% of Roan samples that are not yet identified, which gives us reason to believe there are still more Roan alleles to be discovered (stay tuned)!!! 👀

"Become a student of understanding your horse. If you have a thought and follow through and the horse does it, you’re good. It doesn’t matter if the technique is different. You have a program your horse understands, and you’ll be more solid. That’s a big key to being a good horseman. Have a plan and be able to execute it." –tb

What a legend - may he rest in peace!

The AQHA family has lost a legend. AQHA Professional Horseman and American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Bob Avila passed away today at the age of 72. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his wife, Dana, son, BJ Avila, and the rest of the Avila family and their extended AQHA family. We will post funeral and memorial details as they become available.

Today we are celebrating a huge milestone crossed by a very dear family friend, Stephanie Snyder, as she is currently listed as USEF’s #2 leading Friesian breeder & #2 owner of 2024 🔥

Both Stephanie and her Friesian stallion, Ravel, have multiple world champion dressage titles under their belts, but this is the icing on the cake with their successes carrying forward into the breed. We seriously couldn’t be more proud of you 🎖️
