Today, we harvested 2 bins (about 1 ton) of Pinot Noir. Lots of bunches but small berry size which is probably attributed to the dry spell we've been in this fall. The fruit was very rich/flavorful so the wine for 2025 should be bellissimo. Time will tell!

Hi friends - it's already halftime in the 2025 growing season. Here's a couple of pics of the hedging being done on the vines in Block 1 (pinot grigio and riesling) by our farming team at Nicholas Farm and Vineyard. The ground crew was here just before hedging to remove excess leafage so the fruit clusters are open to the sun and wind for the ripening phase of the growing season.

Cheers!

The last harvest of 2024 took place last week with the picking and transportation of the Riesling fruit. About 4 tons were harvested. The winery is planning to make sparkling wine with it, so it'll be a while before it's bottled and available. Patience is a virtue my friends!

Harvest day for SHV Pinot Noir. Beautiful fruit this year with excellent sugar content and rich flavors due to a hot and dry September. Not a trace of any heebie-jeebies this year!

Pics are a full bin of SHV PN, the two Nicholas Farm jefe's, Jill inspecting and tasting, and Marcos giving his personal OK

2024 final ripening stage in now underway with bird netting on and the rows hedged and mowed. The main field and the Sav Blanc section shown in the pics as well as a sexy shot of the Pinot Grigio showing off its color.

2024 was the first year of "organic farming" here at SHV. The machine attachment shown in the pics is known as a Clemens Machine which is a German company and has the weeding attachment subsystem on the tractor. Mechanical weeding only used by SHV this year. No herbicides!

According to the 1184 Degree Day we've reached, so far, on Old Mission Peninsula, it's halftime 2024 at SHV (thanks to Michigan State University for their farming tools we use). The grapes we grow are typically harvested between 2100-2200 Degree Days, so, we are halfway there (I love math!). Halftime always means it's time for a haircut in the big vineyard which can be seen here being done by machine (don't worry, Jill & I are still doing our small section which grows Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc by hand). Also, a couple of pics of the octopus spray rig doing its thing to protect our precious grapes during the growing season.

Alot has happened at SHV in the last month. First up was suckering where unwanted growth is removed from each vine by hand. Then, first tuck where the new canes are straightened and fed through the first set on wires on the trellising as the vines reach toward the sun. And then seemingly overnight, the canes are reaching for the top wires on the trellises. Just now, the grape clusters are "flowering" in our Pinot Noir section.....I need a nap!

And, they're off (still buzzing about the Derby photo finish). Some pics to start the 2024 growing season. Spring has really kicked in at SHV. In one pic, you can see we left at extra cane just in case we had a late freeze as an insurance policy which we haven't needed (so far anyway). The lilac bush at the former milk house (now a tool shed) is in full bloom this year. Go 2024!
