Mari Vineyards’ founder Marty Lagina made the bold choice to produce world class 100% estate wines using an unprecedented selection of grapes never before grown on Old Mission Peninsula. In homage to his Italian grandmother and namesake for the winery, Teresa Mari, Marty planted unorthodox European varieties such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese alongside classically grown appellation varieties like Cab

ernet Franc, Merlot, and Riesling. Our proprietary Nella Serra hoop house system combined with creative winemaking techniques have made the Lagina family’s dream a reality. Our first vineyard was planted within a mile of our winery over a hot and frantic weekend in 1999, resulting in our flagship wine, Row 7. This blend became our first official production in 2006, and has been our most popular wine ever since. In addition to other fan favorites such as Praefectus and Ultima Thule, our menu is continuously evolving to feature the best wines from the Northwest frontier of the Great Lakes region. Nets are up, and the grapes are ripening!

We’re still about a month away from harvest, but the vineyard is starting to feel like harvest season is just around the corner. As the grapes ripen, they become pretty tempting to our local deer, birds, and raccoons, so the nets are up to help protect the crop.
We can’t wait to see what this vintage brings.

What makes Old Mission Peninsula special?

For us, it starts with the land.

Mari farms 73 acres across seven estate vineyards, rooted in sandy glacial loam soils. We grow 24 grape varieties here, from familiar favorites to Italian varieties like Nebbiolo and Sangiovese.

Some of these varieties aren't easy to grow in Northern Michigan, which is why we've found unique ways to work with our climate, including our Nella Serra hoop houses that give some grapes extra time to ripen.

And because every bottle we make is 100% estate-grown, the story of Old Mission Peninsula is in every glass.

We see veraison occurring in our vineyards as we approach harvest season. Veraison is a final stage in the grape’s ripening, signifying a shift from energy production and growth in the vine to ripening of the fruit.
