SHOP UPDATE /

With a sweet new baby coming any day, I’m wrapping up inventory checks, reorganizing the apothecary, and making lots of lists for spring.

Currently the plan is to take a few weeks off, then reopen the farmstand (with new products
🥳) in April.

Things to note:

🌿 Elderberry cuttings will be available for one more week, then I’ll move them to the greenhouse and start them in pots. Cuttings are $12 for a 3 pack, so if you’re looking for the most cost-effective way to grow your own elderberry, send me your order asap!

🌸 I’m completely out of soap, but I’m working on getting the curing racks full so I’ll have plenty when we reopen in April!

🐮 I have a few jars of tallow, packets of elderberry, and bottles of fire cider available from the winter batch. If you need any of these things, please let me know by Sunday evening (3/1).

🤰 After Sunday, I’m closing up shop and won’t be available to answer messages or schedule pickups for a few weeks.

Thanks so much for supporting Local Folk! I can’t wait to be back in the apothecary (with a new tiny assistant) making for you 🤍

I don’t know which one’s more exciting - the baby belly or the buckets full of cuttings we’re harvesting this weekend 😍

If you’re wanting your own elderberry bushes this year, pre-orders are open on our website! You can choose 3,5, or 10 cuttings from two different varieties that both grow so well here in FL. The perfect low-maintenance start to your homestead medicine garden!

(These are hardwood cuttings. Once you put them in soil, they’ll root and grow new shoots and take off faster than anything you’ve ever seen 😅).

Pre-order here for shipping / pickup starting next week www.thelocalfolk.com 🤍

Elderberry cuttings are LIVE on our website 🥳

Back in the fall of 2023 I was wrapping up my first year of herb school and got the wild idea to put in a little elder orchard on the farmstead.

I was noticing how many of the commercial herbs I was buying and working with were grown in places far, far away and wanted to focus in on learning how to grow and use plants that thrive right here.

We prepped + planted 100 cuttings in a corner of our field and over the last two years we’ve watched them grow into the loveliest little orchard.

They produced a nice harvest of elderberries at the end of summer this year and now that the branches tower far over my head, it’s time to prune!

Elder is easy to grow from hardwood cuttings - you just tuck these sticks in some good dirt and keep them watered and they’ll root and put on branches within a month or two. (In our zone, February is ideal for planting them).

Pre-orders are open now on our website and cuttings will be available for pickup by the end of January. (We’ll send planting instructions so you know exactly what to do 🤍).

Hey fam! The stand is NOT open today because we’re trying to make sure we hold back enough stock to fill current orders.

If you’re needing something, you’re welcome to order through our website and pickup at the stand next week! This just makes it a little easier to keep track of inventory and make sure we don’t oversell during this busy season 🤎

We are *sold out* of soap - we’ll restock after Christmas (if you’ve already ordered, we have you covered).

One last update - many of you have asked about elderberry cuttings / plants. We WILL have cuttings for sale this year 🥳 - preorders for those will go up on the website soon and cuttings will be available in January. If you’d like an email when preorders open up, send a dm with your email address and we’ll add you to the list!

So so grateful for all of you who have supported Local Folk this year. It’s such a gift to serve our community this way!

Turmeric harvest! This year is the first time we’ve ever grown it so we only planted two small beds, but we got quite a few roots. This will get dried + ground and stored away for a later day.

Sweet Hazel is the real superstar behind our milk + tallow soaps. Her milk is what gives our bars the rich, creamy lather y’all love so much!

She’s resting now, but once her babies are born in February she’ll be back to making all the milk we need for soaping + more.

Milk cows are so much trendier than goats right now, but I wouldn’t trade this girl for anything

Seasonal shifts on the outside also means things are changing on your insides.

There’s a reason certain flavors and scents are associated with fall and winter - our bodies crave the energetic warmth of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and others during this season.

Its not just the flavor - it’s traditional, innate wisdom guiding you to the herbs and foods that will sustain balance and well-being through the cold, dry months.

So if you find yourself reaching for all the cozy flavors and smells this week - thank your body for knowing what it needs and trust that instinctive nudge. It’s the best self-care plan you can follow.

When I was planning out our initial product line, I had no intention of including tallow balms. I love tallow, of course, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to bother crafting my own when so many other makers were already offering great ones.

But here’s the thing - the whole idea behind Local Folk is drawing a smaller circle. We want to encourage folks to consume things from the land they live on and to produce goods that their neighbors have a need for. We want to build strength and resilience back into rural communities, and we believe that interdependence between people and place is key to that.

Compared to plant oils like coconut or jojoba, tallow is produced in every state in America. It’s easy to find locally, its production is highly sustainable, and - it works! It’s one of the oldest and most dependable moisturizers on the planet.

We still use plant oils in some of our products, but to skip over tallow when it’s so closely aligned with our vision here seemed foolish.

Our FLORA tallow balm has been a best-seller since (literally) day one, so y’all must think so too 😅

We source our raw suet from right here in our local community, render it ourselves, then turn it into the herb-infused, whipped balm that you all love.

We can’t imagine skincare any more local than that.
