During our recent dive on the mussel farm, we spotted something I don’t see all that often, blood stars! These two were happily taking advantage of the natural seed set on one of our bottom-culture farms. A pretty cool sighting!

Then we came across some of our more familiar starfish. 🦪 In the second photo, you can see a single starfish surrounded by empty mussel shells. One starfish? Not a big problem.

But swipe to the third photo… 👀 When they show up in large numbers, starfish can put serious pressure on a mussel bed and cause some real damage.

It’s a whole different world beneath the surface, and diving the farm gives us a chance to see it firsthand. 🌊🦪

We recently spent some time diving on the farm, and had a blast while learning a whole lot about what’s happening beneath the surface. 🤿🌊

Here’s a little taste of what you can find on our new mussel seed collector system. The substrate gives young mussels a place to settle and grow before they’re big enough to be transplanted to our bottom farms.

We found mussels settling in all kinds of places, including on pieces of bladderwrack. They really seemed to love it! Other parts of the substrate just caught a large set on the natural seaweed.

It’s pretty amazing to see the farm from below and get a closer look at the next generation of mussels. 🦪💙

Mussels for dinner? It’s easier than you think. 🦪

Cooking mussels makes an impressive meal with surprisingly little effort. Give them a quick rinse, toss them into a hot pot with a splash of white wine or broth, add garlic, herbs, or whatever flavors you love, and cover.

A few minutes later, you’ve got plump, tender mussels and a delicious broth begging for a piece of crusty bread.

Simple, fresh, and ready in minutes. That’s our kind of dinner. 🍋🥖

That’s a lot of mussels! 🦪🌊

This week we had the chance to visit the Appalachian Mountain Club’s camp on Echo Lake, where our mussels are a regular part of the all-in camp menu.

Teen Week brings a whole lot of hungry campers, and they definitely know how to put away some mussels! This was just one table of six boys enjoying dinner.

AMC invited us to join them for the evening, giving us the chance to see our mussels being enjoyed at the table and chat with some of the campers. It’s pretty special to see them go from our farm to a camp dinner.
