Steers starting second rotation on the red clover tonight, got 17 days out of first pass. Went through it a little quicker than I'd like but it's regrown well, hopefully i can stretch this out long enough for the sudangrass to be ready for the finishers to graze, then it will just be the younger yearlings here and can slow the rotation down. Last time I did this I had just shy of 2 head per acre and they couldn't keep up with the clover. This time I have just over 3 head per acre and clover is barely able to keep up with them. Eventually I'll get this stocking rate stuff figured out. 2 to 2.5 head per acre is probably about right. When we get our own hay equipment I'll just lean on the plant extra side and bale what they can't get to in time for winter feed.

Moving steers this evening. This morning we met with a rep from PowerOn Midwest. They're proposing a project to run some 765kv power lines, that's 765,000 volts, across southern mn, and just our luck one of the proposed routes is right across our land in the background of this picture. Would obviously make it a little less than ideal for the livestock and our farm. As well as our land it's also both our families land that would get lines across them if this route gets picked. We're obviously not in favor of it but at the end of the day we'll have next to no say in what they do. The rep told us that we do have an opinion on their route, but also told us they have the right to use eminent domain. We've put in our comments on how this will negatively impact us, but so has everyone on the other potential routes. I have friends on both of the other two possible routes that would get stuck with this if we don't.

Well it looked like we were going to have a good barley crop until last night's storm blew most of it over. We'll see if it's able to stand back up or not.

Planted some non gmo beans to use for pig feed. Decided to try a high oleic soybean. A common complain about soybeans is they're high in pufa's (polyunsaturated fatty acids). High oleic soybeans are low in lineoleic and high in oleic, giving them a very similar fatty acid profile to olive oil, which is touted as being the healthiest oil option there is.

Steers grazing red clover. Clover is a risky forage, frothy bloat is possible. When it happens it happens quick and they're likely to be dead before you even notice you have a problem. It's risky but it's rewarding, they gain well on it. Been grazing heavy red clover stands for over half a decade now, I take all the recommended precautions to prevent issues but it still makes me nervous. Bloat risk isn't zero now but it's low and going down. They've been on it over a week and their rumens are adjusted to it and the clover is maturing. Starting to bloom, will be swarming with bees and pollinators soon.

Boop and her calves are Jami's favorite, and for good reason, her dad bought Boop for us before he passed away. I'm normally pretty strict about culling opens out and sending them to the locker but Boop will get unlimited mulligans and get to live out her days here regardless of if she keeps calving or not.

Took the day off work to get some planting done before a rainy weekend. Finished soybeans tonight and checked forecast and it said it wasn't supposed to start raining until around 10 am tomorrow but figured i better get the steers 7 species warm season grazing mix seeded tonight just in case. Got drill loaded and calibrated and headed over at 11. The only thing worse than trying to figure out what has and hasn't been planted yet in the daylight is trying to do it at night. It was slow going with a few times getting out to look for where the last row was, can't wait to see what it looks like when it comes up 🤣 sprinkled last few rounds and was raining pretty good by time I got home at 2 am so lucky I decided to do it tonight.
