Just another reminder we are entering swarm season. If you see something similar to the pictures below, please call a responsible beekeeper to come remove them. Please do not kill the honeybee swarm. They are usually very docile and will eventually move on. They are trying to find a new home. Give us a call and we will be happy to find a good home for them! 🐝🐝🐝

This is a great article that mentions Dr. Aurell from the Auburn Bee Center and their research of a new threat that will be coming to our hives soon from Europe. Hopefully by vigilant interdiction of vessels and containers coming to the US and aggressive mite treatments we will help mitigate the damage from this new threat. 🐝🐝🐝

A mite called tropilaelaps is spreading across honeybee populations in Europe. Researchers are looking at ways to prevent their spread, if they reach the U.S.

It is almost Spring and you may start to see large clusters of honeybees hanging from tree limbs, fence post, mailboxes or vehicles. If so, don't panic. A swarm of bees are usually docile and will not attack, they are focusing on finding a new home and will most likely leave in 24-48 hours once a new hive location is found. A swarm is how a colony reproduces and expands because they have outgrown their original hive. Please do not kill them. Call a local beekeeper and we will be happy to come remove them. Here is the link to the Alabama Beekeepers Association if you would like to find a beekeeper in your area to remove the swarm. 🐝🐝🐝

Early spring in South Alabama (February–April) is critical for emerging pollinators, with key nectar and pollen sources including native shrubs like Eastern Redbud and Blueberry, along with early wildflowers such as Golden Alexanders, Phlox, and Violets. Common "weeds" like Chickweed, Dandelions, and White Clover also provide vital early forage opportunities for honeybees and other native pollinators. You can help them by minimizing cutting your yard, and being mindful of overusing pesticides and herbicides. 🐝🐝🐝

Here is some important information about the Alabama No Comb law and why as responsible beekeepers we should do our part to protect and preserve our honeybee population. 🐝🐝🐝

Every registered beekeeper plays an important role in protecting our honey bee population!🐝 Alabama’s No Comb Law is one of the most important safeguards for the state’s honey bee industry. This law makes it unlawful to import honey bees on comb including established colonies or nucleus colonies (Nucs) into Alabama. Due to the increase in purchasing nucs, we want beekeepers to stay vigilant of this rule.

If you have questions about importing bees or want to schedule an inspection, contact your regional state apiary inspector. For information visit, https://agi.alabama.gov/plantprotection/apiary-protection-unit/
