20th Avenue Pink Cloud 💕☁️

This is the time of year every growing season where I have myself convinced that I’m doing a better job than the year before. From this point on is kind of a make it or break it time for my harvest. Now that most of our plants are blooming I confirm, inspect, and tag every individual plant. I don’t sell from the clump if it doesn’t have its plant tag zip tied at the base. Until I confirm the bloom, the tag stays in the ground. This is where I really fell apart last year. I was so overwhelmed by weeds in one field and the deer kept eating the blooms before they opened in the other. Powdery mildew started to creep in, then my dad ended up in the Cardiac ICU. Just a few weeks after that I found out I was pregnant… and it was all down hill from there 😅 This year will be tricky with a new baby, but as long as everyone stays healthy I’m positive it will go better than last year. I’m determined to sell all of these tubers and not leave them in the ground 🥔

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Manoa to Czarny Charakter. The form is so consistent, the Japanese Beetles ignore it, it has gorgeous dark foliage, and it just keeps pushing out perfect moody blooms. Hard to beat. 🖤

My family’s orchard sold and we have to have the property empty by August 15th. I knew it was coming, so I don’t have any dahlias planted there this summer, but mannn it is a lot of work emptying a 6 acre property. We’re all tired. At least we have these sunny cheerful DL The Special blooms ☀️

This year’s Lee’s Apricot Fizz vs last year’s!

I wasn’t super impressed last year, we didn’t get a single closed bloom all season. I’ve heard that dahlias like a year to acclimate to new climate, but I didn’t have a concrete example in my garden until now. First two blooms and they’re already infinitely better than last year 💛🧡

First Chateau bloom for me, even though I grew her last year too. Mistakenly put in a too shady spot last season while trying to maximize my dahlia plot. This year I have three plants in full sun++ in the hopes that I get arm fulls of blooms!

I’m alive! I didn’t mean to take a break from posting, but I guess I needed it. I’m 8 weeks postpartum and I can honestly say this was the trickiest csection recovery I’ve ever had. The week after delivery, I was back in the hospital for two days with early stages of postpartum preeclampsia. They managed it with a magnesium drip and IV steroids and tripling my blood pressure medication. It was pretty scary how bad the headache got. Izzy was smaller than we expected and wanted to nurse all through the night without being put down the first few weeks. My sleep and my dahlias suffered too 😆

I think I’m finally back on track now in terms of how I’m feeling and how my plants are looking. I’m so grateful for the help of friends to get the majority of our plants and tubers in the ground. I hope the start of your season was smoother sailing than mine ⛵️ Looking forward to sharing so many photos of blooms with you again soon!
