We’ve got our new yarn and hats from our spring wool up on the website! It turned out as a lovely sport-ish/DK-ish weight yarn and I love the lighter weight hats from it! I know it’s not exactly wool hat season but these are great for chilly nights camping or evenings at the beach. And even better, come see us in person at this weekend! We’ll have all the new goods as well as the usuals: lopi, hats, rug yarn, woven mats, and sheepskins. We’ll also be accepting fiber for processing. Hope to see you there!

It was mineral bolus day for the sheep. Getting your sheep the right minerals is probably one of the most important things you can do for your flock. Having the proper mineral balance impacts pretty much EVERYTHING: general health, disease resistance, resilience to environmental pressures, fertility, lambing ability, parasite resistance/resilience, fiber quality, etc. It can take time and a lot of trial and error to find what works for your flock. Over the last few years we have started giving these slow release mineral boluses twice a year in addition to loose mineral and kelp. These help to ensure every animal is getting what they need even if they don’t eat much of the free choice mineral we provide, and boy, we have seen huge improvements in areas that we were having issues in! It feels really good to try something and see positive results! Thanks for making it easy to get our hands on these!

Exciting news! We are returning part time to the Skowhegan Farmers' Market this year and our first market is tomorrow! We were at this market for a few years and loved it and after some time away in the mill we are ready to get back! We’ll be guest vending once a month with all of our sheep goods. We’ll have our pasture raised lamb and naturally tanned sheepskins, and our yarn, hats and woven mats that are all grown, spun and knit on our farm. Can’t wait to see you all there! Our dates for the season are 4/25, 5/30, 6/27, 7/25, 8/29, 9/19 & 10/31

Our 8th lambing season has come to a close! Our final count is 33 lambs from 18 ewes. After mostly ewe lambs to start the season the rams caught up a bit by the end and we finished with 19 ewe lambs and 14 ram lambs. It was one of our smoothest lambing seasons yet. Over these past 8 years we have worked hard to get nutrition dialed in and have really seen it pay off. Less grain during pregnancy cut down on giant lambs, and our current mineral and supplements seem to be working well for fewer malpresentations and quick and easy labors. It’s a slow process to learn and adjust from because it takes a whole year to see if our changes worked, but we are getting there! We had no issues during pregnancy and no losses or stillborns, so I am a happy shepherdess!

We had a special treat this year of having come to visit and beautifully capture some lambing season moments. The first 7 photos are from her, the rest are mine from later in the season. I’m sure you’ll be able to see the difference!

We are one week into lambing! We’re up to 15 lambs - 10 ewes and 5 rams. It’s turning out to be a big ewe year! Usually we see the opposite with more rams born. So far so good! We had one true breech (coming butt first) but I was able to get her easily sorted and delivered just fine. Otherwise we’ve seen only a couple malpresented lambs and most births have been smooth and unassisted with strong lambs and great moms! Our oldest girl who delivered a huge lamb started to prolapse her uterus after (tough combination of an old mom and a monster lamb), but we saw it early and got her treated and strapped up in a prolapse harness. Everything stayed where it should and she was back to her normal self in a few hours. Everyone is healthy and doing great. Here’s hoping things continue this way! We’ve got 10 ewes left to lamb.

Sheepskins are here and they are stunning! These are the final part of our yearly cycle with sheep. With the return of these beautiful wooly treasures, we are able to remember the creatures they came from and say a final thank you as we prepare for the cycle to begin again with new lambs on the way.

As always, thank you for taking such good care of them and turning them back into something so beautiful.

They’ll be up in our shop this weekend!

With only a month until lambing, we are in to late gestation. This is when lambs do 70% of their growing and energy demands go way up for the ewes. It’s time to bring out the good hay and keep a close eye on everyone as they finish growing those babies. They’re looking great heading into this last month. They are starting to get wide and are doing a lot of eating and resting. Can’t wait!
