Happy Memorial Day with a shout out to my Grandfather Tom James, and all the committed men and women who have served our country and are serving today.

Grandpa served in the US Navy and commanded a ship in southern France In 1944. He lived until age 101 and only began sharing his war stories when my cousins and my kids took him fishing or studied WW2 in school.

What an honor it was to move you into your Columbia University dorm four years ago, and experience you graduate today with a BS in Astrophysics!

You stretched and challenged yourself academically, made a huge group of dynamic friends, got to know every subway line, restaurant and museum in New York City, and stayed connected to your adoring family along the way.

I am happy for you, and most importantly, know your Mom iswatching from above with tremendous love and pride!

Anyone for a Cinco de Mayo Blood Orange Spritz? Here’s how to make this easy, vibrant cocktail!

1. Make a simple syrup by combining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes until sugar is dissolved and syrup is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and cool completely.
2. Make the Cocktails: Juice 4 blood oranges into a medium glass bowl. In a large cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine 1 cup tequila, 1/2 cup Aperol, blood orange juice and 2 tablespoons simple syrup (add more if needed). Cover and shake well, then strain into 4 highball glasses.
3. Fill glasses with club soda and squeeze a lime wedge into each cocktail.

Tonight we gather to remember.

Charles Phan built something rare — not just restaurants, but an entire community of diners celebrating Vietnamese food in America. His Slanted Door cookbooks have a prominent spot in my kitchen as a reminder of a the times we cooked together and the fact that sharing meals always leads to a much a bigger story.

Tonight, and honor his memory at with a tribute dinner that I know will be full of love, flavor, and community.
