Just over here enjoying our workhorse dahlia collection rather than chasing unicorns in earlier than ever fall tuber sales. Anyone else with me? 🌸🥔

I follow a formula for deciding how many fancy dahlia varieties to grow. I wrote about it on my cut flower blog if you're curious. Growing dahlias in zone 5b in the Northeast means we have to do things differently than our PNW dahlia friends (who I love and adore, hi 👋).

Variety selection is really important given our short season. I refuse to be disappointed with poorly performing dahlias and so should you. 😊 Please let me help you.

We moved back to NY on a whim. Put in an as-is sight unseen offer on an 1800s farmhouse with a couple of barns, acreage, and a creek. Sold our beloved Portland, Oregon home and quit really good jobs. Said goodbye to friends.

Danny and I both grew up in NY. Me in the Finger Lakes and him in the Hudson Valley. It made sense to come home for many reasons, but it was definitely an adventure. We drove cross country in a van with our just-neutered puppy and son, hoping we'd love our new place.

Thankfully we do. We really really do. But there were some challenges (snakes in the house 😱), new lives, new jobs, and lots of renovations. And then to make it more interesting, I started a flower farm while teaching full-time. 🙃

It's hard to believe it was just a hayfield at one time.

My heart could burst after getting back some photos from the talented Kateri Connolly Photography. She's been documenting our flower farm for five years. The best part that I can't share here are some family photos and a few of our 15 year old son. ❤️❤️❤️

I couldn't do any of this without Danny. He doesn't grow flowers with me as he runs his woodshop Palmer Woodcraft | Dan Palmer. But he's my rock and my best friend. He's helped so much with infrastructure and emotional support. So grateful to be doing what I doing. Growing flowers and teaching you how to grow them too. ❤️

Dahlia Bracken Rose. So pretty! Do you think so too? Some people go crazy for softer palettes but others love dahlias with more saturated colors. What do you think?

What a gorgeous day to pick dahlias! 🌸✨️ Thanks to everyone who has come for the dahlia u-pick. It's so much fun watching people light up as they're snipping stems. 🌸✨️ Dahlias are just the best.

Hoping we escape frost Tuesday night and have another week of beautiful blooms. 🤞

Dahlia bouquets for local flower lovers 💖 I see that frosty forecast coming and all I can think is that this is what the flowers teach us. Both to be here now and to let go. In the meantime, grab a bouquet at our two local spots or come pick dahlias Saturday morning. Just a few spots left. Would absolutely love to see you.

Lilies...but...

These are not your grandma's lilies. Aaand... if we're gonna get serious about offsetting the 85% of imported flowers we buy in the US, we're gonna have to talk about lilies. Grace Lam from Fivefork Farms wrote such a brilliant article for the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers magazine.

We're still choosing billions of dollars of chemical-laden imported blooms when we could be thinking outside of the box more to support more local flowers. Lily hybridization has come such a long way. Are you willing to give lilies another try? Would love to hear your thoughts! I just picked these beauties and more fall lilies are on the way.

Eek! The best part of the year is when dahlia season intersects with the arrival of tulip bulbs. We grow about 10 months of tulips and dahlias combined.

The first of several tulip deliveries came yesterday. Behind the scenes we've already done lots of preparation for tulips, but they'll increasingly claim time and attention in the upcoming weeks. Pretty happy to give them that.

Lucky in love 💕 We cut buckets of dahlias last evening while wearing jackets. Fall is definitely here. 🍂 Happy autumn!

Picking dahlias after a lovely yoga class with Lara Green held inside the high tunnel = a pretty incredible Sunday morning in September. 🌸✨️

Thanks so much to everyone who came. And to Lara for guiding us along the transition from summer to autumn. 😌

We've got lots more yoga on the flower farm happening next year.
