This Saturday will be a beautiful day to come out to the ballgame and Dedication at 1 PM at the John J McGraw ballfield in Truxton, on Cheningo Rd. The event is free and open to the public. There will be seating in the grandstand (one of the only ones like it left in the country) and some chairs. People are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for sitting on the ground in case other seating is filled.
The Dedication commemorates a new historical sign memorializing the 1938 baseball game when the NY Giants came to Truxton to play the Truxton Giants and 8000 people attended.
An exhibition baseball game played by Homer All-Stars and Moravia All-Stars will follow the official program, beginning at 2:30 pm. Hall of Fame announcer Jon Miller of the San Francisco Giants has recorded a special message for the occasion.
John J McGraw memorabilia will be displayed in the Truxton Depot near the ballfield.
There will be Food vendors in town and on site including the Truxton Fire Department and Ladies’ Auxiliary’s beloved chicken BBQ and baked goods, Truxton Trail Riders Hotdogs, Christ’s Church in the Valley beverages, LuLu’s Kettle Corn and Mega Moo’s Ice Cream truck. Local businesses, including the Truxton Outpost, the Hiawatha Inn and Reakes Country Store will have food and merchandise available for sale.
John J. McGraw grew up and played local baseball in Truxton and became a Hall of Fame baseball manager after a respectable playing career. Over his career, McGraw won 2,763 games (third only to Connie Mack and Tony LaRussa), 10 National League pennants and three World Series. He owns the record for the longest winning streak in Major League Baseball history. McGraw pioneered tactics still used today, including the Baltimore chop, the hit-and-run, and the squeeze play.
