In excavating our root cellar, thought to be built by Garet Garrett the writer, we found two of these long buried bricks.
The Mack Manufacturing Company of West Virginia made these yellow (street) paving bricks over 100 years ago. We have not found them used anywhere else on the property so how they got here is a real mystery! We are preparing to waterproof and plaster the root cellar and put it to use.

09/11/2022

Today we met again with Stockton University to discuss our plans for tapping our maple trees for sap to make maple syrup in 2023. Although this year was our first attempt and very disappointing, only 17.5 gallons of sap from 30 tapped trees, we are planning to add a vacuum system that should increase our yeild. Here are a few photos to help you to distinguish one variety of maple from another. We do want to avoid tapping the Norway Maple trees as they produce a milky sap. All of our trees this year were Red Maples. We hope to become a “hub” this year where we encourage others to tap their trees and bring their sap to us to evaporate! More information will be coming about this so stay tuned. It’s easier than you think to tap and collect!

We are planting these purple beauty berry shrubs at the farm. They are not only very attractive but they will feed the birds too! You can find them now at Surran’s Nursery LLC in Corbin City.

Callicarpa Americana more commonly known as Beauty Berry is one of the most easily recognizable backyard plants. It grows pretty much anywhere, and most people think of it as just a w**d. It is easily identified by its bright purple berries, and due to its color, most people think it is poisonous. However, this is incorrect. Not only is beauty berry not poisonous, it has several household uses.

Despite their bright purple color, the berries on a Beauty Berry bush are edible. They aren’t the most delicious fruit, and when raw, their flavor is somewhat astringent. However, the berries make a great jam. Adventurous eaters can find recipes for this jam online. The jam has a mild flavor, and tastes like a mixture of muscadine and apple jelly. It makes a great gift as it is something that you can’t find in stores. Another use for the plant comes from its leaves. The leaves can act as an insect repellent in a pinch when they are broken and rubbed against the skin.

Another strange bug at the farm today!
Actually it was two bugs, one carrying the other.
Arilus cristatus, also known as the North American wheel bug,[1] is a species of large assassin bug in the family Reduviidae and the only species of wheel bug found in the United States.[2][3] It is one of the largest terrestrial true bugs in North America, reaching up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) in length as an adult. They eat caterpillars and other soft bodied insects and have a very painful bite.

Plants and insects tonight on the farm! It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. The pumpkins and mums are ordered, it’s also time to order the salt hay to cover the 700 new strawberry plants over the winter, and we are already discussing the upcoming maple syrup season. Wishing we could stop the clock for just a while to catch our breath. We are not ready for the growing season to be over just yet.

We thought we were in the clear but as it turns out, we are not!
Here is a photo of a Spotted lantern fly from China at the farm on a Tree of Heaven.
The tree known as Ailanthus altissimo , Chinese Sumac or Tree of Heaven, is a very invasive spacies (also from China)and is the preferred host of the spotted lantern fly!
We will now begin to do whatever we can to organically reduce this insect population.
