This week at the Dreamflower Garden Farm Stand:

Every Wednesday, weather permitting, 6-7pm, under the mesquite tree in the alley to the north of Glenn between Edith and Flanwill. Look for the signs on Glenn and by the entrance to the alley

With the arrival of the monsoons we may be forced to cancel at short notice. We will cancel any time the temperature is predicted to be 106 or higher. We will close for thunderstorms, dust storms, and rain. Please check online before coming and be careful driving since conditions may change quickly with little warning.

Monday Musings: Last Friday I had my seed saving workshop and no one came. I still consider it a success. Sure, if I had gotten word out sooner and made personal invitations and advertised better I might have had people show up, but I can't always do what I wish I could do. Surviving as a gardener in this climate, surviving as a business in this economy, surviving as a woman in this society, surviving as a human in this crazy, messed up world, means that some days I just have to put one foot in front of the other and carry on while other days I just have to accept that I can't do it all. The seeds have been piling up, so I just sat down and started working.

It was a perfect day for it, with a light, intermittent breeze that exactly right for winnowing fine seed, like lettuce and poppies. Pouring them back and forth between one bowl and another, I ended up with two pounds of poppy seed clean enough for baking. There is a quiet satisfaction in seeing the chaff float away, leaving the seeds behind. Each kind of seed has a different rhythm as I work. There is a different satisfaction at the end when I see how many buckets I have emptied, leaving only jars and envelopes to store, either for consumption or for planting.

It is an endless task. Though I cleaned many seeds, there are many yet to go, so next month I will do it again, maybe with more foresight and advertising. I will be harvesting more seed in the meantime, filling the empty buckets with more seeds for the future.

Seed Saving Workshop! 9-11am on Friday, June 12th.

I am very excited to once again offer a monthly workshop on seed saving. If you have ever wanted to volunteer on the farm, but didn't think you had the physical capability, this is the perfect chance to participate. We will work with an assortment of common garden seeds for flowers, fruits, and veggies, learning the best ways to collect, thresh, winnow, and clean seeds for future planting and eating. A tour of the garden is included and we may collect small amounts of seed, but most of the work will be sitting together in the shade doing hand work, so it is also a fun social activity. I can answer all kinds of garden questions in addition to seed saving information, and everyone can take seeds for their home gardens.
