Even in very early stages of training, Laela helps goat life run a bit more smoothly!

This week was very dog focused! Laela and I attended a farm trial clinic on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I worked cleaning, Thursday we visited our friends Stephanie and her dog Harley at work on a dairy farm in Maine for a relaxed hour or two, and Friday they visited us for a goat walk through the woods. Watching Harley, who is used to working cattle, adjust her pressure and rate with such tiny stock was a real treat. She unmistakably knows these are babies, seen here keeping straggler Maverick with the group without causing him additional stress at the end of our walk. I’m thrilled that we have Stephanie and Harley to learn from!

One down, five to go. It’s looking like a goat barn in here! Sale of the stall fronts will cover hay for the year. While beautiful, they were just not practical for goats. No more pooping in the buckets for these girls!

We are far from polished, but we’re getting it! The goal here is for Laela to move the goats to me and hold them there. She is learning to go around behind the goats, rather than plowing right into them and scattering them about. I’m learning to be coordinated in my movements/aware of my body language with 6 goats and a dog, and to be supportive and not over correct Laela as she learns. It’s harder than it sounds! 😅

We have friends AND family visiting from out of town this week! In order to be able to spend time with them, pick ups are by appointment for the week.

A day’s notice is preferred, but may not be required if I have milk bottled and ready to go.

Why by appointment? While I work short hours outside of the home, I need to be physically present at my barn for the duration of hours I set and post, at a time when I am not actively milking goats or doing chores that prevent me from pausing what I’m doing to help customers. I also have three dogs who I keep at the house or closed off when I’m expecting customers. In addition to safety concerns with vehicles coming and going, two will bark, one is learning not to jump on new friends, and not everybody wants to deal with that just to get some milk! My goal is a self service stand, we’re just not quite there yet. You are not inconveniencing me by scheduling a pick up, you’re making my day! Not sure you’ll like it? I’ll give you a sample, and I won’t hold it against you if it’s not your thing!

If you can’t make it during these hours, please send a message and we can accommodate you at a different time by appointment.

Never had goat milk, and not sure you’ll like it? We’ll gladly give you a sample to try before you buy!

Pictured here is our bulk tank with approximately two days worth of milk in it. The bulk tank was my first major equipment investment. It rapidly chills the milk, and is set to keep it between 36-38F. Getting the milk cold fast and keeping it that way is important not only for the best flavor, but for food safety as well!
