Today Griffin and I went and told the bees that Dad — Griffin and Piper’s grandfather (Andad), Jim Deming — passed away on Wednesday, May 13.

There is an old tradition in beekeeping called “Telling the Bees,” dating back hundreds of years in Europe and early America. Beekeepers believed the bees were part of the family, and that they needed to be told of important life events — especially deaths — or the bees might leave the hive or stop producing honey.

So today, Griffin carried on that tradition and let Dad’s bees know he was gone.

Rest easy, Dad. We love you, and miss you dearly. ❤️🐝 🦉

Shadow Mountain Honey suffered an enormous loss on Wednesday.

Our dad, Jim Deming, passed away. If you knew our dad, you knew he was passionate about birds and nature, classical music, and a good book. He loved to travel, loved laughing with his family, and thought his grandchildren, Zoe, Griffin, Thomas and Piper, hung the moon.

He was also an integral part of our honey company the last 12 years. He built and painted many of the boxes and frames we use every day in our operation.

In addition to helping us with our beekeeping operation, our dad spent countless hours volunteering at Oxley Nature Center, leading Tulsa Audubon bird walks, and promoting education about birds and native habitats. Dad especially loved Flycatcher Trail, which my sister and I walked yesterday morning while thinking of him.
