🐝 It doesn’t get much more LOCAL than this! 🍯🌼

We’re incredibly fortunate to keep several of our Shadow Mountain Honey Company hives right here at the Tulsa Botanic Garden, where our bees have access to acres of beautiful flowers and plants throughout the season.

And you can find our local Oklahoma honey in the Garden’s gift shop—along with a surprisingly great collection of cute bee-themed books, gifts and goodies. 🐝

It’s a real privilege to have our bees in such a beautiful Tulsa landmark and to play a tiny part in the pollination happening there.

Tulsa bees. Tulsa flowers. Tulsa honey. 🍯❤️

Next time you visit the Botanic Garden, take a peek in the gift shop—and keep an eye out for some of our girls working the flowers!

🍂 Fall isn’t here yet… but the bees can see it coming. 🐝

It may still feel plenty like summer outside, but nature is already getting ready for what comes next. Our asters are getting closer to blooming, and before long these purple flowers will become one of the honeybees’ most important late-season food sources.

When they finally burst into bloom, the bees will work them hard — gathering some of the last big rounds of nectar and pollen before colder weather arrives.

In the meantime, the honey stand is stocked! 🍯

There is something both beautiful and heartbreaking about finding a honeybee like this.

A worker honeybee quite literally works herself to death.

From the day she becomes a forager, she leaves the hive again and again—sometimes flying miles in a single trip—gathering nectar and pollen for a colony she will never live long enough to see thrive through the seasons.

And every flight leaves its mark.

Her wings begin perfectly clear and whole. Over time, the edges become worn, frayed and tattered. Unlike us, a honeybee can’t repair her wings. Every mile she flies is a mile she can never get back.

Eventually, there comes a final trip.

She lands on another flower, just as she has thousands of times before. She gathers what she came for. But sometimes, when it is time to leave, those tired wings simply don’t have another flight in them.

And so her life ends there—on a flower, doing the work she was born to do.

There’s something profoundly fitting about that.

She didn’t know she was pollinating our gardens, helping produce our food, or carrying home the nectar that would become honey. She simply spent her brief life contributing to something much larger than herself.

No retirement. No recognition. No expectation of reward.

Just thousands of flowers visited, countless miles flown, and a colony made stronger because she was here.

Then, at the end, one last flower.

For a honeybee, I can’t imagine a life better lived. 🐝🌼

🍯 Before you buy “local” honey, ask one important question: Where are the hives?

At Shadow Mountain Honey Company, the answer is simple: our hives are located throughout Tulsa and its surrounding communities. Our bees gather nectar from the neighborhood gardens, native wildflowers, and flowering trees that grow right here in our area.

Our honey is harvested from our own hives, bottled right here in Tulsa, and sold directly to our neighbors. Every jar offers a genuine taste of our area while supporting healthy honeybee colonies and our family-owned business.

It’s hard to find honey more local than this! 🐝

🍯🐝 BIG LOTION BAR NEWS! 🐝🍯

Say hello to our newest scent… Cuban To***co & Vanilla. 🔥

Warm, smooth, rich and just a little sultry—our newest lotion bar is available NOW on our self-serve honor stand!

With the arrival of Cuban To***co & Vanilla, we’ve officially retired Cool Citrus Basil from our lotion bar lineup.

Now for the not-so-fun news…

After keeping our lotion bars at $7 for years, we’ll be increasing the price to $9 each beginning September 1, with a mix-and-match deal of 3 for $24.

But there’s good news! 🎉 You have the entire month of August to stock up at our old price:

All the honey is spun, our crop came in pretty solid all things considered. Not a record, and partially a good crop because we have more bees this year. The work kicked our butt. I am so proud of my son Griffin for spinning nearly all of the honey by himself while I worked my day job. Next year I'd like to help him out by replacing his bread knife that he uses to slice open the frames with this automatic uncapper. This machine should drastically speed up our processing time and allow us to run more bees, and make more of Tulsa's most delicious honey.

But first.....we need to sell a good chunk of our crop to cover the cost of this machine. About 450 Pint Jars to be exact. (unless I have a rich friend out there that wants to make an $8500 donation to help the "cause"). ;-)

So come by our Self Serve Honor Stand today and buy some honey, lotion bars and lip balms so we can stimulate the economy and buy this automated uncapper!
