The more you know!

WHY IS IT SO HUMID: Two reasons. One is the most obvious: we've seen quite a bit of rain, and that moisture evaporates from the soil and causes humidity to rise.

There's a second reason, though! Healthy crop evaporate additional water into the lower atmosphere. While not nearly as much as the soil, crops still evaporate enough to make a noticeable difference when outside. We call this evapotranspiration. In fact, one acre of healthy corn evaporates up to 4,000 gallons of water into the atmosphere EACH DAY! On days like today where the humidity is already through the roof, crops can add additional misery to those who are outside in this heat.

The more humid it is, the harder your body has to work to cool you off... so it keeps trying over and over by making you sweat buckets. When the humidity gets this high (dew points in the middle 70s), it's very difficult for your body to cool when outdoors for prolonged periods of times.

While likely not a science lesson to any area farmers that pay thousands of dollars a year in irrigation (they know how much water these crops drink!), perhaps it's a science lesson for you on this Wednesday. :)

Thanks to my good friend Matt Leach - ABC21 Weather over in Fort Wayne for the idea -- "geeks" all around! :)

We are getting lots of calls and questions about FALL ARMYWORMS. There is a big outbreak in the state now, and they damage both hayfields and home lawns.

By the time they are in this wandering or marching phase, they are fully mature caterpillars, and will not be around many more days.

But, this time of year, there can be a lot of overlap in generations, so there could be some younger ones still there eating your grass.

In the past, a pyrethroid insecticide, such as bifenthrin (Ortho Bug-B-Gon) or permethrin has worked well against these in the home lawn. You can buy this, or another pyrethroid in a ready-to-use hose end applicator, and this is an easy way to treat smaller lawns.

This year we are hearing some reports of fall armyworms being hard to kill with pyrethroids alone. You can still try the bifenthrin first, but if it does not work, then a Spinosad product (GreenLight, Bonide, Monterey, and others sell this) should work better.

Or you may want to hire a commercial applicator to treat, if necessary.

See page 8 of the following Extension publication for more details on controlling fall armyworms in home lawns. Link: http://extension.msstate.edu/publications/control-insect-pests-and-around-the-home-lawn
