Tall Fescue Grazing
It is that time of the year when warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass and bahiagrass decrease in productivity. On the other hand, tall fescue, a perennial cool-season grass can extend the grazing season in the upper southeast (AR, LA, MS, AL, GA) and the transition zone (KY, TN, VA, and WV).
Tall fescue maintains a relationship with an endophyte (fungus) to provide protection to the plants under stress. The endophyte transmits to new plants through the seed. There are three types of tall fescue: endophyte infected K-31, novel endophyte, and endophyte free.
K-31 has been in pastures in the US since the 1930s and over 70% of todays pastures might be K-31. It is also known as infected fescue because the endophyte produces a toxin called ergovaline. In cattle, high ergovaline levels can cause elevated temperature, abortion, rough hair coat, hoof issues and sloughing of the tail. In horses, it is recommended to remove pregnant mares in the last trimester of pregnancy. Goats are less affected by ergovaline levels in tall fescue.
Novel endophyte fescue (friendly endophyte) contain an endophyte that was selected to keep the relationship but does not produce toxins. Endophyte free fescue does not contain any endophytes but they are much shorter lived and need to be replanted much earlier.
