What goes around comes around … these two were my very first goats back in 2013. They had the first goat babies on the farm and when I retired them to a life of leisure as pets I never thought they’d be back. But things are funny that way, their second mom married last year, has a baby of her own on the way and is moving to a new farm. We’ve stayed in touch over the years and she expressed her concerns over finding them a new home amid the changes in her life. And so … here they are. Nokelee and Mosella, sisters bonded for life, having a little alfalfa snack in the trailer and taking a break after the trip before meeting the geese who will be their new pasture mates. More to come …

Sustainability is a just buzz word for many but here on the farm it has real meaning. This crop of Abruzzi Rye was grown without tillage or fertilizer. It won’t break any yield records but the bottom line can’t be beat. The field was fallow for two years, bushhogged twice in August of the second year, rye seed were broadcast the following September. One horse and five alpacas were allowed to graze the field at will. Two groups of free range layers were allowed to graze within electric net fencing and were moved two to three times about the field during the winter. The field has matured a very reasonable crop in spite of some cold damage and very dry conditions. It is not a monoculture, with many of the previous year’s perennials emerging under the rye growth. The production of a grain crop, without off farm inputs, as well as supporting egg production of the layer flocks and fiber production of the alpacas, while still maintaining biological diversity, from plants to insects to birds and mammals is possible, even in areas of limited soil fertility and water resources. Really proud of these results.

Hi folks! You may remember this precious pup from Thanksgiving when she was unceremoniously dumped on my road. Since then she has been vetted completely; vaccinations, deworming, spaying. She has gained lots of trust in humans but is still a bit skittish. She is young, around two, and would be a wonderful companion dog for someone who likes to exercise with their dog, who has a fenced in yard, or is interested in a very willing partner in obedience and/or agility. Unfortunately, she failed her poultry safe test and cannot stay on the farm any longer. Please share this as widely as possible so we can find her a great home! Contact info: (919) 357-6273
