QUEEN CELLS/EMERGENCY CELLS

When a hive loses the pheromone of a queen, they spring in to action to quickly raise another one. They find eggs that were meant to make workers that are the perfect age, modify them and feed them a nutrient rich diet of what’s called Royal Jelly. I’ve seen hives with 15-20 emergency cells.

From here, it’s a race to see who develops and emerges first. The first queen to emerge will then go around to all the other cells and chew the sides off the cells and eliminate the larva that was intended to be another queen. Sometimes, she may miss one or they emerge simultaneously and I’ve even found hives with 2 queens wondering around. The new queen then goes on a mating flight to a drone congregation area and once done, she returns to the hive to begin laying her eggs.

In this picture, you can see the queen cells that were chewed from the sides to eliminate future queens.

Join me as I install a new queen in a split hive!

You’ll see me go through each frame and look for queen cells then destroy them. Normally in a queen-less hive you want to see queen cells to know they are producing their own. I knock them all down because we don’t competition for our brand new mates queens that are being introduced.

In total, I think I removed about 15 cells from this hive.
