Parasite management starts long before you ever reach for a dewormer.

Parasite eggs and coccidia oocysts are passed in manure, and under warm, damp conditions, can become infective within just a few days. Regularly removing manure and wet bedding helps interrupt that life cycle before goats can reinfect themselves.

Creating dry lots, keeping pastures truly clean and dry (as best as you can), elevating hay and feed, cleaning water buckets, preventing overcrowding, rotating or resting pastures, and avoiding grazing grass too short can all reduce parasite exposure.

Good husbandry won’t make a herd completely parasite free, but it can significantly reduce the parasite pressure your goats face. Pair it with routine fecals, FAMACHA scoring when appropriate, good nutrition, and targeted treatment (NOT automatic/routine deworming) to help keep your herd healthy while protecting the effectiveness of our dewormers.

Sometimes, getting your work and your chores done for the day earlier than usual, so you have your entire night ahead of you IS self care.

Tonight, that’s the self care I needed. A quiet night inside, with nothing to do, knowing all the chores were done.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a difference. And tonight, that’s what I needed.

Pink eye or simple eye irritation??

Not every watery goat eye is pink eye! Dust, wind, flies, hay particles, ammonia, or other environmental irritants can all cause temporary tearing and discharge.

Simple irritation is more likely when -

• The discharge is clear and watery
• The eye remains open and comfortable
• There is little or no redness or swelling
• The cornea remains clear
• It improves after the irritant is removed

Pinkeye is more concerning when -

• The conjunctiva is noticeably red or swollen
• The goat squints or holds the eye closed
• Bright light bothers the eye
• Discharge becomes thick, crusty, or pus like
• The cornea develops cloudiness, a blue/white haze, or a visible spot
• Similar symptoms begin appearing in other goats

Early pink eye can look very similar to ordinary irritation. Foreign material, a corneal scratch, entropion, or another eye condition can also cause tearing and squinting, so discharge alone cannot confirm the cause.

Any cloudiness, visible spot, significant pain, severe swelling, injury, vision trouble, or worsening symptoms should be investigated quickly. Eye problems can progress quickly and threaten vision.
