Smith has delivered the diminutive yipping goods. She tried to have them under a log in the woods, but we outsmarted her. For now, at least (while the corral remains locked), puppies are safely in the barn.

Late summer marks the rise of Midasโ€™s kingdom: the goldenrods appear all over the farm. Some are already 6โ€™ high, some are already blossoming gold. Theyโ€™re a boon for the honeybees, and theyโ€™re elegant too in their simplicity/power to take over everything!

er, Green Heron! This species thrives at the farm, living around the loch, typically in solitude (though I once encountered a merry party of six!). Itโ€™s about the size of a crow but its unique โ€œchuckโ€ call is much more pleasant. We welcome all the green herons around: live long and prosper, my friends.

During the evening feeding, the sky darkened into the threat of rain from the east (while the south and west remained relatively clear). Weโ€™ve had so many boy-who-cried-wolf rain threats this summer that we shrugged our shoulders and carried on. But in the final stage of evening chores - inside the old barn, with its deafening metal roof - the skies burst open and spilled down torrents of delicious rain. Though that meant walking halfway across the farm back to the house in the drenching rain - it was worth it.

The old (1946) barn has just about outlived its usefulness. As we prepare for existing barn demolition and new barn build, the goats and dogs get a temporary barnlet. The milking room will be an adjacent 8x8 shed. Naturally, everyone is curious about the goings-on right before their eyes.

Look for temporary housing for the chickens and rabbits too, coming soon.
