wishing we could have realized our solar charger was malfunctioning more than we had thought before this rain 🌧

chad had noticed our charge controller would fault out for an "over voltage" code way before it was near the max voltage. well, after he did some troubleshooting yesterday and messing around, no matter how many panels we had connected in a series it was reading the same wattage. we are currently in a battle with the company trying to get an exchange credit to get a different sized charge controller or our money back, or something.

i am grateful for chad's knowledge and understanding of electronics. he has also spent years learning photovoltaic systems. i think a lot of people misunderstand how solar powered energy works. there are so many more components than just the panels catching the energy that have to be considered when creating a system that suits your needs. we even made a costly mistake that works for the now, but wouldn't be sustainable for our needs once our home is built. thankfully we will easily be able to find a new use for this system in the future, but we were planning on trying to use our current system for our home.

it is easy to be mistaken when you don't have a great understanding of something. it is almost natural. we have had many issues aince moving in a week and a half a go. most stemming from misunderstanding. we learned from our misunderstandings and solved most of our issues.

who knew learning photovoltaics would also teach you valuable life lessons.

i didn't plan on sharing much of juniper and poppy on here to respect their privacy, something we feel will be important for future generations, but yesterday was our first day in 6 days we did not have anything to go away from our new home base.
moving (which we are not 100% done with) the last week has been the most stressful one we have done (we have done 9 moves in 6 years, by the way). we have been going back and forth an hour each way between our rental and our property.
we are exhausted, and the kids are exhausted. we are learning to live tiny again, with not one, but two small kiddos this time.
i love living "tiny," but damn it is hard readjusting this time. the girls are adjusting to their new home, their new room, their new routines, new everything. it's huge for them. there are so many emotions right now.
but this yesterday morning, i took the time to try to add a new routine that is so exciting to them: a morning ride on the rhino.
they absolutely love riding and pretending to ride this thing. we took a simple ride down to the pond and then back up to our county road and across the ridge to where it meets the state road.
we took time to stop and notice the cows. we learned that mama cows' udders "make milk like mama's bo***es" to feed their babies. we saw a hornet's nest hanging from a tree. we observed that there are different leaves on different types of trees.
we finally found some time to stop and breathe and forget everything else that has been going on the past week.
we found peace for a moment.

we finally have water hooked up! now we just need to move the rainwater tank and mount the pump. we are so excited to be powered completely by natural resources!

stop. breathe.
watch as mother deer feeds her fawn.
see how mother earth gives life.
plants.
trees.
birds.
bees.
mothers with infants attached to their breasts.
tiny humans to grow kind.
we owe everything to the mother.

thoughts from this morning.
i had a whole other post half written out that i was going to post today but the draft somehow got deleted. i just dont have time or energy to sit and rewrite it. it will still be posted later this week and it will be a series.

it isn't new, but it's usuable and a whole lot more for a fraction of the price, and we get to keep things from going to the landfill. ♻️♻️♻️

reclaimed building materials are a lifesaver. $300 bucks for 40 pieces at 20 feet and 20 pieces at mixed lengths. we were quoted around $200 from a couple of local metal roofing places for 6 pieces at 13 feet. now we have more than enough for our porch to finish the rainwater harvesting system and have so much left over to use for future projects.

550 gallons ready to catch some rain water.
hopefully, in the next two weekends, we can finish up the rainwater harvesting system! all that is left is building the roof on the porch and starting the gutter system, and finding the right pump and water filtration system to suit our needs.
we are so, so close to moving in. after the rainwater system is complete, all we like is collecting the rest of the solar components, building the array, and wiring the batteries and system together to run to the camper.

check your local blessing boxes!!!

both of these two were bone dry and it honestly doesn't take much money at all ($62 for everything here) to help. i'm not saying you have to spend that much to help, but if everyone chips a little towards mutual aid, we can help so many of our neighbors.
we have got to start doing better for our neighbors. pitch in what you can, when you can. foods and hygiene items are so important for everyone to have access to. i also believe pads and tampons alone are so, so important to have access to.

is a great organization for our EKY friends to support. look around your city and region for ways to help support your neighbors.

help your neighbors!!!

do you or someone you know have scrap building materials (wood, blocks, tin, screws, etc) you no longer have a use for and want to get that scrap pile out of your yard? let us know! so far all but the posts and blocks, our porch/rain roof build has been built with materials we salvaged from my mom's scrap pile from where she had her pool deck redone. We love being able to give materials that still have some life in them rather than having to buy new. we are all about that "reduce, reuse, recycle" motto.

working on our cover porch/rainwater harvesting roof this evening!
being able to rely on what mother earth gives us is one of our biggest goals.
harvesting rainwater is one of the biggest resources a lot of people skip out on. even if you're weary about drinking rainwater, you could always collect to use for watering flowers and garden, for animals, and a whole host of other things to minimize your water bill and dip your toes into being living a more sustainable life.
that is one goal we have for this page, showing people how to make small changes to help lessen the strain we have put on the mother.

martha stewart shining a light on the movement back to native lawns. from how we got to these "picture perfect" laws and on why people are moving back to the natural diversity of their natural laws.

this is something we are super excited about. in asheville, we experimented with a pollinator flower garden and we has so many beautiful native plants growing and so many pollinators visiting! juniper loved going out and watching the butterflies and hummmingbirds feast on her flowers.
