Alternative ways to plant cover crops - drone seeding! Keystone Precision Spray helped us broadcast triticale into our standing corn using a drone. 😎

Why drone seed? Here are the advantages for TCF:
•Drones can plant in standing crops.
•Field conditions do not affect drone seeding.
•Zero soil compaction.
•Getting maximum coverage for broadcast spreading.
•Growing will begin before first crop is harvested.

Keystone Precision Spray serves central PA and specializes in drone spraying, cover crop seeding, and specialty crop care. For more information check them out on FB Precision Spray LLC or call John David Fisher at 814-571-7891.

The quietest hours on the farm are often the sweetest. Watching the mamas feed their young in the early morning light brings a calm peace before the busy day begins.

Baling the third cutting of GreenFast is a true pleasure with a view like this!

From the King’s AgriSeeds Inc. website:
GreenFast is “a fast starting mix that is of very high quality. This mix can be used for wet hay and/or managed grazing. The main festulolium component is very fast starting, high yielding and of excellent forage quality, but is short lived (typically 3 years). Plant this mix and expect performance. Also contains longer-lived species. Can be used to thicken weak alfalfa stands and thin pastures. Best used north of the Mason Dixon Line.”

This week we proudly hosted a grazing conference with the Capital Resource Conservation and Development and the Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalition. Both organizations were interested in our grass-fed farming techniques and philosophies. George spoke about grazing management, soil health, livestock needs, and forage species/growth. Attendees got to experience Thistle Creek Farms in action through a tour, pasture walk, and dog herding demonstration. The conference was a huge success as farmers and community members learned how to keep grazing lands productive and in the forefront of Pennsylvania agriculture.

Capital Resource Conservation and Development (Capital RC&D) “partners with farmers, landowners, conservation professionals, and community leaders to develop technical assistance, education, and economic opportunities throughout South Central Pennsylvania.” Learn more at capitalrcd.org.

Pennsylvania grazing land coalition works together with producers, farmers, and community members “to maintain and improve the management, productivity, and health of Pennsylvania’s privately owned grazing land.” Learn more at www.paglc.org.

We are out in the fields today harvesting sorghum-sudangrass for our winter cow feed. Despite the relentless heat wave and wildfire smoke, our crew is pushing through. We are ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws our way to keep the herd fed and happy!

As you can see, thick smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed Pennsylvania today. The smoke drifting from southern Ontario is severely degrading air quality and reducing visibility across the Commonwealth, including our area.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the devastating wildfires across Canada right now. Please help us keep the brave firefighters, the displaced families, and the impacted communities in prayer. ❤️ 🇨🇦

Witnessing living history today as the legendary 1941 Big Boy No. 4014 thunders down the tracks through Spruce Creek Valley, Pennsylvania.

Big Boy No. 4014 is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. Of the eight remaining big boys in existence today, No. 4014 is the only one still in operation. This stunning locomotive has journeyed to the east cost for the first time as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. The tour includes a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia, major display events in eight cities, and more than 50 whistle-stops in 10 states, including stops for the first time in Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.

An absolutely unforgettable experience for all. Nothing beats the exhilaration of chasing the King of the Rail!
