This Week in Harvest: From Vine to Crush 🍇

At Thirsty Owl W**e Company, harvest is well underway. On September 10, W**emaker and Vineyard Manager Shawn Kime, Vineyard Manager Kyle Van Allen and Assistant W**emaker Gabby Markowski brought in Diamond grapes, marking another step in this year’s vintage.

Then, on September 30, the same crew returned to the vineyard to hand-pick Pinot Noir. Thirsty Owl’s Pinot Noir is among the reds they harvest by hand, with the fruit later sorted before heading into the w**emaking process.

From the first grapes coming in to the careful work of hand-picking in the vineyard, harvest is a team effort from start to finish.

This Week in Harvest: A Legacy Rooted in Hybrids 🍇

At Bully Hill Vineyards, harvest carries on a tradition of grape growing that dates back to 1880. In the late 1950s, Walter S. Taylor and his father, Greyton H. Taylor, began replanting the family vineyard with French-American hybrid varieties, believing they were well suited to the Finger Lakes’ cold climate.

Today, that vision remains at the heart of the vineyard. With nearly 90 acres of estate vines, Bully Hill grows a diverse collection of hybrid varieties, including Baco Noir, Cayuga White, Seyval Blanc, Geneva Red and others selected for their hardiness and ability to thrive in the region.

From vine to bottle, the vineyard reflects a long-standing belief in what hybrid grapes can do in the Finger Lakes.

This Week in Harvest: Old Vines, Lasting Character 🍇

At Silver Thread Vineyard, harvest is underway as Pinot Noir is being hand-picked for their 2026 Dry Rosé of Pinot Noir. Planted in the early 1980s, these vines are some of the oldest on Seneca Lake, with decades of history rooted in the vineyard.

That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. At Silver Thread, healthy, living soil is at the heart of their biointensive approach to farming, combining scientific knowledge with regenerative practices to support healthy vines and a thriving vineyard ecosystem.

This Week in Harvest: Reporting Live from the Scissor Lift 🍇

Harvest is officially underway at Lakewood Vineyards, where the team began picking estate fruit this morning at 6 a.m.

After a humid and fairly wet August and early September, the vineyard team has been taking extra care to manage disease pressure and protect the fruit as it reaches harvest. Those efforts are paying off, with grapes looking good and promising chemistry heading into the cellar.

This week, Lakewood will be pressing natives, hybrids, and Vinifera as the 2026 vintage begins to take shape.

This Week in Harvest: A Family Tradition 🍇

At Airy Acres Vineyard, some of their smaller lots and special w**es are harvested entirely by hand. For their Blanc de Blau, that means bringing the family together to pick the grapes.

These photos from last year show the family picking Lemberger for Blanc de Blau, their special white w**e made from a red grape. It’s a tradition that brings the family into the vineyard together, with the care and attention that goes into making something special.

We’re looking forward to following along as harvest gets underway and sharing more of the people, places, and stories behind the 2026 vintage.

Each year, Riesling Camp brings w**e trade professionals from across the country to the Finger Lakes for an immersive exploration of the region, its vineyards, w**es and people.

After four days of tasting, learning and conversation, our 2026 campers left with a deeper understanding of Finger Lakes Riesling, from the influence of site and vintage to the decisions made in the vineyard and cellar.

Most importantly, they experienced the people behind the w**es and the community continuing to move the Finger Lakes forward.
