Twining Pastures·Sunday, December 30, 2018·
Our story started in 1958 when Howard and Olive Twining purchased a ranch in Ukiah, California. Today that ranch is 1,500 acres of beautiful rugged land. In 1981 I (Eloise Twining) began renting out space for horses in a couple of big fields near the house. A few years lat
er, I returned home on a very cold, early February day and found the horses in those fields starving. It had been such a cold winter that no grass was growing. I never wanted that to happen again so I increased my rates, bought a barn full of hay, added a vet check to make sure horses were getting vaccinations. I didn’t want hay all over the fields and stomped into the mud so in the next years I built pens along the sides of a pole barn so horses could be individually fed. Iris Barn
In about 2002 I added a 90 x 110 ft arena near the Iris Barn. On another part of the Ranch there is another barn, the Red Barn, built in or before 1916. Ten years ago it was in pretty rough shape, with deep mud all around it, two or three feet of mouldy hay in it, and splintered, hazardous wood. Here is a “before” picture. It took a lot of work and tons of gravel, but today the Red Barn is a great place to keep a horse. The feeding pens are roomy and feeders are inside. The original 5 acres of pastures has been expanded to almost 15 acres with more coming. The Red Barn in 2015. While the Red Barn was being fixed up, Oracle Oak Arena was built. This is a 140 x 250 foot sand arena. Currently it has a round pen in one corner. It is easily accessible from Old River Road in Ukiah. As you can see, Twining Pastures isn’t fancy, it is just a ranch with good horse keeping facilities. What I offer is a place to keep your horse and all the tools to care for your horse successfully. All boarders have access to the entire 1,500 beautiful acres to ride as well as to the arenas and round pen. In addition Day Use Memberships are available for non-tenants, and organizations are encouraged to contact me about use of the facilities.
