How Iceland makes the impossible possible: growing fresh produce year-round in a climate that doesn’t exactly make it easy. 🇮🇸🌱
One of the things that fascinated me most about Iceland was seeing how they’ve learned to use what their land DOES give them. With an abundance of geothermal heat and renewable energy, they’re able to heat and light greenhouses even through the cold, dark Icelandic winters.
Friðheimar is an incredible example. 🍅 Geothermal hot water heats the greenhouse, while supplemental lights powered by Iceland’s renewable electricity help make up for limited sunlight, allowing tomatoes to grow year-round.
And you can actually eat right inside the greenhouse, surrounded by what’s growing around you!
I’ve always believed food culture reflects the land and climate, but Iceland is such a cool reminder of what can happen when you combine what nature gives you with a little innovation. 🇮🇸🍅
