harvesting grapes, tomatoes, plums, peppers, arugula, red mustard, zinnias, amaranth, sunflowers and italian beans. Indian summer is heavenly after the summer and smoke we've had.

Last week for Hood River Market at the Middle School-from 5 to 7, not 4 to 7...Next week we move to Springhouse Cellars for a whole new experience in shopping at the farmers' market-cant wait...life is change, change is good.

great Mexican-ish soup recipe for all those vegs no one buys-tomatillos, poblanos, onions-cheap at the farmers market this time of year-sweat onions, peppers and garlic, add tomatillos, chicken stock, cooked black beans, smoked paprika, cumin, and when it all melds and you're ready to eat, serve with goat cheese and cilantro-yum-also hot sauce of whatever your pleasure...better than it sounds even...go tomatillos and poblanos, no roasting or peeling. Can throw in tomatoes if handy...

National Heirloom Exposition in Santa Rosa, CA Sept. 11-13 sounds like something not to miss...anyone from the gorge going?

Strawberries winding down-have to say some of the best I've ever eaten IN MY LIFE-later ones better, small and ugly often the best. Sweet like nothing else. Gooseberries better cooked except for Jack Schrimsher who likes them fresh, raw. I bet he eats rhubarb raw too. He likes sour as he said. Raspberries kicking in. Plums also but I'm gonna have to have a talk with the birds...seriously.

Peas, garlic scapes, strawberries...raspberries getting red, grapes blooming...spring's over and it's summer now. Garlic's even getting ready to pull.

Made the first jam of the season-strawberry. What a beautiful red it is. Only a couple of glitches but 12 pints done. Yipee. Tastes like our very ripe berries but sweeter, better.

The challenges of growing in the gorge-Juneuary-night time temperatures last several days in the 40's still-gonna be 61 high today. It's June. So melons, cucumbers, squash are not happy...but of course the wire worms, aphids, pill bugs and slugs are very happy. But we finally got the grapes tied up on their new wires. 70 tomorrow, and all next week. Yippee.
