“Grain for girls, pasture for boys”

We have always prided ourselves for being grass fed and forage only. Unfortunately, this correlated with the fact that we struggled to increase our goat/sheep/cattle herds. Year after year (15 years 😵‍💫) we produced 75+% male offspring. They were consuming a diet high in omega 3 which was primarily pasture.

Last year we wanted to skew those numbers so we could grow our herd. Before breeding, we began feeding grain which is higher in omega 6. We also bred part of the herd with heifer sexed semen which greatly helped as well.

We finished calving with over 70% females! We will finally have some replacement females to increase the herd!

The bulls passed their breeding soundness exams! PCC Karat turned out this evening with the cow herd. They were all bred AI a few weeks ago so hopefully the bull will be cleaning up. The young bull is a 15 month old, small frame Red Angus that we raised.
