😊 I love how many people are concerned about Sig’s fluffy coat. I promise he’s not melting.

Great Pyrenees have a double coat for a reason. That coat doesn’t just keep them warm in the winter—it also helps insulate them from the summer heat and protects their skin from the sun. Shaving a Great Pyrenees can actually make it harder for them to regulate their body temperature and increases the risk of sunburn.

Sig’s job is protecting our livestock, and Mother Nature equipped him pretty well for it. My job is making sure he has plenty of fresh water, lots of shade, and keeping up with his coat as he sheds.

So don’t worry… there won’t be a ā€œsummer buzz cutā€ for Sig. He’ll be keeping his fluffy armor just the way nature intended. šŸ‘šŸ¶ā¤ļø

Which of you mother sheep agreed to babysit these five lambs?

I searched for this little lamb for an hour… and the one who knew where she was refused to leave her side. ā¤ļø

A couple of days ago, one of our newborn lambs disappeared. Her mom was happily grazing in pasture 4 without her, and I spent the next hour searching everywhere I could think of.

The whole time, our livestock guardian dog, Sig, kept refusing to leave Pasture 3. I even called him several times because I wanted his help searching, but he wouldn’t budge. As it got darker, I finally gave up because I simply couldn’t see anymore.

When I walked over to the gate to leave… there was Sig.

And sitting quietly beside him was the missing lamb.

He hadn’t ignored me at all. He had chosen to stay with the one who needed him most.

I reunited her with her mother, who clearly wanted her close, but for some reason refused to let her nurse. The little lamb tried every ewe she could find, but they all turned her away. With temperatures around 80°, I knew she probably hadn’t had anything to eat all day.

So she came home with us.

Now she’s getting a bottle several times a day, and Farmer Nick had a wonderful idea—we introduced her to our bottle-fed Red Holstein calf, Honey.

The two of them have become fast friends. ā¤ļø

Sometimes, the family we need isn’t the one we expected.

And once again, Sig reminded us why livestock guardian dogs are so incredibly special.

🌱 From seed to supper.

This spring, Farmer Nick seeded this pasture, and now it’s doing exactly what we hoped—feeding our cows and heifers with fresh, nutritious forage.

Watching them spread out across a new field and graze contentedly is one of those simple moments that reminds us why we do what we do.

šŸŽ„ If you listen closely, you can probably hear the train in the background. Around here, that’s just part of the soundtrack of country life.

šŸ‘€ Want to know how I find newborn lambs without seeing them first? Watch Sig.

Most people think a livestock guardian dog’s job is chasing predators.

But sometimes the biggest clue is when they don’t move.

This morning, I looked across the pasture and saw Sig locked onto one particular ewe. He didn’t come running to greet me like he usually does. He wasn’t checking on the rest of the flock.

He was staying with one sheep.

That’s when I knew exactly what I’d find.

A brand-new lamb.

Sig had quietly stationed himself beside a first-time mom and her newborn, keeping watch while they bonded. He knew they were the most vulnerable members of the flock and never left their side.

These are the moments that remind me why livestock guardian dogs are so incredible. Their job isn’t just protecting the flock from coyotes—it’s recognizing when one ewe and one tiny lamb need an extra layer of security.

Good boy, Sig. ā¤ļøšŸ‘
