Proud of our smartie pants, Megan Lauber!

We are continuing our “Where are they now?” features with Megan Lauber! Learn more about Megan and her journey in the dairy industry below!

Please tell us about your higher-level education.

I received my B.S. in Dairy Science with a Certificate in Agricultural Business Management in 2018 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2021, I completed my M.S. in Dairy Science under the advisement of Dr. Paul Fricke, and my thesis focused on strategies to optimize fertility with sexed semen in dairy cattle.

What are you up to now?

Currently, I am a Ph.D. student in the lab of Dr. Paul Fricke in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My dissertation is focused on integrating basic physiology, management practices, and economics to optimize use of sexed semen in dairy farms. My goal is to establish an innovative and integrated research and extension program in dairy cattle reproduction as a professor at a university.

Do you have any advice for current college students?

I would advise current students to take advantage of the experiences offered and step outside their comfort zone. Go study abroad, work in a research lab for a semester, or pursue that unique internship experience. These experiences help you discover your career interests, the culture of the organization you want to join, and connect you with lifelong friends and mentors. Further, always remember to advocate for yourself. The answer is always no if you do not ask the question!

How has receiving an NDS scholarship honor made you feel and how has it spurred you to achieve greater goals?

I am honored and humbled to be a former recipient of a NDS scholarship. The legacy of NDS and the opportunities that it provides for students is phenomenal. This scholarship gave me more financial stability to pursue research and find my true calling.
