Thanksgiving. A whitewashed holiday stemming from massacre on May 26, 1637, where colonial forces killed more than 700 Pequot men, women, and children at Mystic, Connecticut. One written account from Phillip Vincents says: ““the English … surrounded and burned the large Pequot town near Mystic, killing more than 700 Native inhabitants, shocking their Native allies with their wholesale slaughter of the entire population.” It is important to pause and reflect on the land where we live, gather, and celebrate. Long before colonization, these lands were cared for, tended, and honored by Indigenous peoples
—the original stewards. Recognizing their presence, knowledge, and resilience is one of the most important rituals we can observe during this holiday.
What is a land acknowledgement?
A land acknowledgement is a statement that recognizes the Indigenous peoples who have historically cared for the land where we live and gather. It honors their enduring relationship to the land and their ongoing presence in our communities. This practice encourages humility, respect, and awareness, connecting gratitude not only to what we receive, but also to responsibility and care for the world around us.How to practice it:
Take a moment to research the Indigenous peoples whose lands you live on. A helpful tool is https://native-land.ca, which identifies territories, treaties, and languages of the original stewards.
You might then offer a statement aloud at your table today, or hold it in quiet reflection.

For example: “We acknowledge that we are gathering on the traditional territory of the [name of the Indigenous nation(s)], and honor their enduring relationship with this land. We give thanks for the care they have shown for this place and commit to approaching our time here with respect and presence.”

Observing this ritual is not only an act of respect-it centers Thanksgiving in truth, awareness, and gratitude that extends beyond ourselves. It grounds the holiday in justice, presence, and connection to the land and its original inhabitants.
May your Thanksgiving be a peaceful one, rooted in truth and bound by loving connection to the Earth and Each other.

There’s new life in the world! This spring we had 5 ewes carrying and they delivered 10 lambs all together. Most births went effortlessly and resulted in bouncing happy babies.
Sadly, Emmy, our smallest statured but biggest personality, gave birth to 2 still borne ram lambs. The loss of these lambs, her first ever birth, was really saddening. Emmy has always been a kind and loving flock mate to new additions, treating each new lamb gently and even playing with them when their moms were exhausted and “over it”. We were so hoping for her to have her own little ones to love on but sadly, that wasn’t in the cards for her this season.

Gratefully, we have a healthy flock of 15 sheep going into grazing year 2025!
-7 Adult ewes (Mama and Lucy our retirees, Okie, Jojo, Nala, Ullë and Emmy)
-4 new ram lambs (Frank, Lip, Carl and Poco) -4 new ewe lambs (June- bug, Ruby, Hildy and Pearl).

It’s late fall and that means freezer camp for Stucky. This love bug came Earthside last Thanksgiving. He’s grown into a sweet and gentile guy on grass and his mother’s love. If you’re interested in custom cut whole or half a lamb for your freezer- nows the time to connect.

He’ll likely hang at about 55-59 lbs and will provide some great sustenance. If you’re interested in learning how you might welcome Stucky (or part of him) to your freezer this month- please reach out soon! His last day is on Monday 11/18.

No news is good news! Peace and quiet on the farm.
Welcome to a new Ewe- Tulsi! Aka Guini Ridge Oklahoma! She retiring from her old flock and is now in charge of a little flock of maiden ewes from Guini Ridge farm. Glad to have company hanging with the H2H crew this summer.

The flock is fat and happy on summer clover!
