I harvested some absolute gems from the garden this week. I'm excited to share a few flower arrangements from my booth at the La Grande Farmers Market, Saturday 9 am - noon.

The snapdragons were grown from High Desert Seed & Gardens high elevation adapted 'Sunset Mix', and indeed they tolerated our hot dry July!

Today's adventures included picking up farm animal food from the fire camp in Elgin!

For those who don't know, the Hagen Fire currently spans over 50,000 acres across Umatilla and Union Counties. This fire is only a handful of miles from the northeastern Oregon community of Elgin, which is fairly close to us here in Union. There's a camp set up to feed about 1000 wildland firefighters! In a short amount of time, the camp's recycling team, Genesis and Caroline, have successfully diverted literally TONS of waste from going in the landfill. I'm so impressed!

Lots of thanks to Jenny for putting me in contact with this awesome crew.

Elwood made a pallet box for compost with hinged doors! I'll continue to do one big "hot compost" in the spring using manure, but needed a place to store all the other moldy goodies I collect during the rest of the year.

Recently, I was asked if I sell compost, and I don't sell the compost I make because I need it all for the garden and seed farm.

Zinnias are coming soon! These ones are a seed crop for Snake River Seed Cooperative so I won't have many as cut flowers, but I hope to share tons of pictures here in the coming weeks!

Another successful chicken handoff yesterday with Heather of Heather's Family Farm, this time sending some sneaky roosters back to Baker County!

Don't forget, we sell eggs laid by our happy hens at Community Merchants in La Grande!

July photo dump and update: Union has been experiencing hazardous air quality for the last 11 days or so. We're definitely thinking about all the firefighters and everyone right in the thick of it elsewhere. Hopefully we'll get rain and cooler weather soon 🤞 For now, farm life has to keep going-- animals still need caring, plants need planting, and crops need weeding. Stay safe if you can and enjoy these midsummer blooms!

And also thanks to Derk, Elwood, and Kaitlin for each little bit over the last month to help me get these 250 tomato plants squared away 🍅 I think I'll be able to post a harvest update soon!
