We had a great day at the Oregon Climate & Agriculture Network Soil Health Field Training event with Dr. Shannon Cappellazzi, learning all about soil, soil sampling, and soil tests (and a bit about organic biological amendments from Soilcraft (Corporate HQ, WA)). Showing how the tubers turned out on seed-grown dahlias 🌸



Video description: Dora using a large broadfork to dig up dahlia tubers (like a pitchfork but the blades go perpendicular to cut into the soil, and it's larger-- 2 feet wide, made out of heavy steel-- and has two 5-foot handles on either side). Sunlight is out and grass is green, but the dahlia plants are brown and wilted from frost. Shows close up of rinsing tuber clump in yellow bucket, about 8-12 skinny tubers. Rinsed clump is placed on a perforated metal table to drain. Then back to compare tuber-grown dahlias, which have 12-16 larger tubers.

It looks like we're *really* supposed to get frost in Union this weekend, so I'm bagging-and-tagging the dahlias before ...

It looks like we're *really* supposed to get frost in Union this weekend, so I'm bagging-and-tagging the dahlias before digging up tubers for storage. I took notes on 75 different dahlia plants this morning!

Insects play an important role here! Praying mantis bugs might look scary but they eat grasshoppers and earwigs, making them a gardener's friend. I move mantis bugs to the garden when I find them in the wrong spot (like in the equipment yard or near the barn where she'll get eaten quickly by chickens). Here's one I found already hanging out among the cherry tomatoes.

I found a garter snake enjoying the protection of perennials waiting to be planted in the fall 🐍 Garter snakes are good for the garden! They eat insect pests and small burrowing rodents, and it's always a good sign to see more biodiversity like this.

The snake wouldn't hold still long enough for me to count the cheek scales so I can't tell you specifically which kind of garter snake!

Just goes to show how unpredictable the weather is! Phew! 😅🌤️

Video description: Starts by showing a red dahlia just beginning to bud, sunlight, green plants all around. Quickly pans out to show more pink and orange flowers in the background. Switches to large squash leaves and reveals a couple dark green pumpkins hidden underneath. Next shows some browned squash leaves at "We lost a few leaves but all the plants seem fine." The weather is unpredictable this time of year. When the average first frost doesn't arrive by September 20, then we're running on borrowed time until the day we wake up to a brown and wilted garden.

Some weather sites are saying frost tonight (though not all agree). Sadly, the beautiful clear sky might mean it will be on the colder side of the predictions.

In the meantime, if this is to be the last fresh bouquet of the year, please enjoy! I remain grateful and hopeful🤞🌸🍂🌕
