Some things our mind flags as "hard" and we push the task to the back burner, halfheartedly saying "oh yeah, I need to do that soon" everytime we're reminded of it... for months on end.
I could literally make a list of things I've been putting off all year! But last week, when lack of freezer space backed me into a corner and forced me to get one of those "hard" tasks completed... I rendered tallow for the first time.
And guess what.... It was SO. DANG. EASY.
Sometimes the "hard" part of life(homesteading or not), is training your mind to look at things differently. 🌼
We butchered 50 chickens, just the two of us, no fancy scalder and plucker set up. I hope this encourages everyone to be content and make do with what you have rather than letting bumps in the road slow you down ;)

Why goat milk soap? 🥛
Honestly, when we started using goat milk in our soap, it was just because we had a glut of it, and it sounded fun. Right away though, I realized this soap is different, a lot different!
After doing a bit of research I learned that the lactic acid in goat milk, with other naturally present acids, work to exfoliate dead skin, providing a gentle clean without stripping and irritating the skin. It does this by breaking down the bonds between dead cells so that your younger, fresher skin beneath can emerge. Ultimately, this means that it is ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin, babies, or those with skin conditions.

I keep getting messages about low stock on our website and I just want you to know I am making soap like a crazy woman and selling it just as fast! In the past week we have almost doubled our batch sizes to accommodate demand. My curing rack is about to burst. 😆 Thank you all for your understanding and patience throughout these growing pains! Local friends, we need your help!
We are gearing up for providing you with all the delicious and nutritious farm goods this year, we just need to know where you want to find us!
I've listed several Farmer's Market options that we are within distance of. If you regularly visit one of these locations and would like to see us there, comment below.
Other options include a weekly CSA (community supported agriculture) subscription. For those that haven't heard of a CSA, it's where you pay for a share of farm goods up front and each week you pick up your share of what's in season. This provides you with a variety of fresh produce. We would have half and full share options for produce and eggs. Pick up options could be on-farm, as well as in multiple surrounding towns. If you like the sound of that, let me know below and if you'd like more info feel free to ask.
A once or twice a week on-farm pick up is another option. Most of you know we're located just a few miles from Uniontown. This would be like a farmer's market stand, on our farm. If you would like to get raw milk, on-farm pickup is your only option in the state of Kansas.

Salt, Fat, Acid & Heat 📖

Me either, until today 😆 I don't have the book but here's one of my go-to crock pot recipes when I'm super busy.
Pictured is our homegrown pastured raised chicken legs but this recipe works great with breasts or whole chickens as well!
Here's the recipe ⬇️
- 4lbs chicken
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup chicken bone broth
- 6 Tablespoons lemon juice
- 5 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons fresh parsley, chopped
Rub chicken with oregano, salt and pepper. Sear. Place in crock pot.
Mix remainng ingredients excluding the parsley. Bring to a simmer in same skillet you seared the chicken. Pour over chicken.
Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours. 10 minutes before it's done sprinkle with parsley.

- Eggs! Such a reliable and quick source of protein.
- Enjoyment! I don't know anyone who doesn't find it relaxing to watch chickens scratching and pecking.
- Bug control/pasture clean up! Ticks, fleas, parasites, grubs, grasshoppers- you name it, they devour it.
- Free alarm clock! Okay that's just a joke... kind of 😉
- Fertilizer- anywhere and everywhere they go. This can be good and bad 😅
- A quality source of chicken for your freezer.
- Free labor! Chickens are wonderful at prepping an area to start a garden as well as turning compost.
- Sustainability! Left to their own devices, chickens will proliferate without any effort from you.
