What a great and educational event today at Whippoorwill Creek Farm! We toured the farm, saw the herd (very happy in their lush green pasture) and learned so much about not only how they raise their beef(moving the herd to fresh pasture daily, seeding and restoring native and deep rooted grasses and other forage), but why they choose to grass feed and finish their cows, and how to cook a delicious steak. This 5th generation family farm is turning their 600 acres into a regenerative operation that heals the land and water and produces a delicious product. Have you tried grass fed and finished beef? Higher protein and nutritional values, beautiful marbling and great taste!
We grilled 2 of their cuts alongside a grocery store version of the same. No contest!

I stop by often and say hi to her, have a little chat. Today I lingered a little longer. Brought her some flowers. It’s been a year, and while it may seem silly to some, she was just that good of a dog. Love you Sooner!!!

Raccoon, enough from you!! You have:

wrecked my hummingbird feeder
deconstructed many birds nests
eaten what is inside said nests
removed camera from porch
opened and eaten 2 pails of birdseed
destroyed a bluebird box
knocked over a bird bath
and claimed our front porch as your own

Today’s reminder about homesteading: slow down, look around.
We (I) am really good at looking around and seeing ALL the things that need to be done, or look better, or….you know! Today I was stopped short twice, once with this view of the pond- the cattails waving, a cool (!) breeze blowing, the sun shining; and then I turned around and stopped short again when I saw this Monarch Butterfly on the milkweed. I had just commented to the farmer about how much milkweed flower there is this year and that the butterflies are loving it and there she was. We stopped and watched her hungrily drink and fly from flower to flower for as long as she let us watch.
And I was reminded of the beauty that is our place, warts and all. It really is a charmed life.
