Common Wealth Farm LLC

Common Wealth Farm LLC Our farm, established 2010, has been known for its high- quality, pastured, organically-fed chicken and turkey. Our motto is, "Local Food Is Our Common Wealth."

Starting in 2025, we will cease meat bird production and concentrate on our free-range layers that feed on grass, bugs, and non-GMO food. Started as a family farm, it is owned by Charles and Jackie Wilson and managed by son Tim. We strive to practice sustainable and ecologically sound methods in all our endeavors. We sell our products at farmers' markets, restaurants, and community markets in Main

e. When creating value added products, we either grow our own items or try to purchase them from Maine farms and vendors.

In response to the SNAP funding crisis, MFFM will continue providing Maine Harvest Bucks at farmers' markets regardless of whether your card has remaining funds.

When you show your EBT card at the Info Booth of any participating farmers' market, you'll receive $15 in Maine Harvest Bucks to spend on fresh produce. You can do this every time you visit the market in the month of November.

Maine Harvest Bucks is our statewide food access program that makes shopping at the farmers' market more affordable, and pays farmers the full retail value for their work.

Normally, when you spend SNAP/EBT at the farmers' market, you earn matching bonus Maine Harvest Bucks. SNAP shoppers are an essential part of the farmers' market community and we will do all we can to support you.

If you still have funds on your EBT card, you can continue spending them, and the regular Maine Harvest Bucks match is still in effect.

Find a list of all currently open participating farmers' markets at https://www.maineharvestbucks.org

Not a SNAP shopper, but want to help? We need you.
Maine Harvest Bucks is a highly efficient, effective food security and farmer support program. It empowers over 30,000 Maine households to eat more fresh, local food, and brings over $750,000 a year in direct, full-value sales to Maine farmers' market vendors. This is the most difficult post I've ever written. How do you honor a loved one without writing volumes about him? How do you name all the ways in which he meant so much to you and your family? How do you repay all the selfless moments he bestowed on family and friends? There is no way to harness all the humor with which he gently teased with a twinkle in his eye. Silos can't hold the tears he shed for any hurts his family experienced. And arguably, no heart could be larger than his with the pride he had for his family.

Most recently, many of you knew Charlie for 14 years as the local purveyor of some fine chicken! Others remember him as an engineer at Pratt and Whitney before he took early retirement in 2008. But, when writing or speaking about Charlie, you all mentioned the same things: Beautiful soul, sweet, calm, friendly, kind, and patient, with a bright smile. I'm thankful you remember him that way and let me know.

My family and I are so grateful for your condolences and prayers. Charlie would have been humbled by your wonderful praise.

Warmly,
Jackie and Family

For the second year, Mid-coast Maine is participating in the "Into the Light" campaign of the "Finding Our Voices" organization. Restaurants, merchants, and farmers' market vendors will donate a portion of their proceeds from sales of yellow items in July. The donations provide resources for women survivors of domestic abuse.

This is more important than ever! Farmers' market season is starting, so go explore all the wonderful options.

Let's remember where our food truly comes from and choose to support the families and communities right here at home. Their dedication deserves our unwavering support. Choosing American-grown is an investment in our own soil and our neighbors. Let's keep that in mind when we shop and make choices that strengthen our country from the ground up.

It is with great sadness that we at COMMON WEALTH FARM in Unity have decided not to continue our poultry meat business. We come painfully to this decision. We have met so many people that we treasure and consider to be more than customers or associates, but friends. It has been our pleasure to get to know so many great people and become a small part of your lives and community. We will miss you all. And we hope that we have contributed a small part to your lives or business with the best chicken we knew how to produce. We believe that locally produced food is the best for our health and the economy, and we hope that support of the local food movement continues. We just feel it is time for us to move on.

There are many factors that have led us to this decision. After 14 years, the structure around our licensed facility has deteriorated to the point where major repair or replacement would be required. The future of our entire nation’s small farm economy is uncertain with squabbling over farm bills, foreign purchase of farm land, supply price increases due to tariffs, subsidies to huge farms, and so on. There is constant threat of avian flu. Our birds are pastured and therefore not isolated from wild birds passing through the area. There is the possibility of losing our entire flock after the investment in stock and feed. While we have some of the most loyal and dependable associates that we could hope for, they alone are not enough to sustain the workloads required to maintain our flocks. We have not been successful in hiring and retaining more farm workers.

And we, ourselves, are looking to the future. The younger ones can’t reasonably sustain the physical work indefinitely into the future. And the older of us are well past retirement age and cannot contribute to the physical workload any longer. And so, we have decided it is time for the older of us to finally retire and for the younger ones to hopefully move on to a more personally sustainable business, hopefully in agriculture. We will continue to sell our eggs at Belfast Co-op.

As with all current business these days, many of our supplies come from off-shore, the costs of which will undoubtedly rise with the imminent trade wars. As a small business, we cannot absorb these costs and would no doubt have to pass along these increases to you, our customers. We learned early on that we could not compete with the huge subsidized farms on a low-cost basis. So we decided to offer our customers the best quality poultry, grown with organic practices, that we could produce at something below organic prices. We fear that the required price increases required by the trade wars will make our product less affordable to many of those we wish to serve.

We are forever grateful for your past support, and we look forward to seeing you around town!

Warmly,

Charlie and Jackie Wilson, Owners
Tim Wilson, Farm Manager

And if you need our free-range, non-GMO eggs, you can find them at Belfast Community Co-op.
