Started as a family farm, it is owned by Charles and Jackie Wilson and managed by son Tim. We strive to practice sustainable and ecologically sound methods in all our endeavors. We sell our products at farmers' markets, restaurants, and community markets in Maine. When creating value added products, we either grow our own items or try to purchase them from Maine farms and vendors.

It's that time of year when not only are farmers planning for spring planting, raising chicks, ordering supplies, and juggling a myriad of other chores, but also a time when farmers' markets are inviting new vendors to join their memberships. Rockland Farmers' Market is one of those we attend. It's a very active market with a wonderful mix of products, consistent weekly entertainment, Rockland Public Library kids' program, and winter market in Nov/Dec. Maine Harvest Bucks, SNAP/EBT, and Bumper Crop Bucks are accepted by most vendors. So please share this opportunity with farmers/producers/makers who are looking for a venue to sell their unique products.

Everything takes on a more defined beauty when coated in winter garb. Trees stand out uniquely with their long or short needles or bare branches. Most birds and animals are in stark relief against the frosted background. Winter, with its limited light, provides us with a different perspective that, hopefully, allows us to slow down and recharge.

Reminder to our Bangor Farmers Market patrons: The next winter market date is Sunday, Dec. 17, 11-1, at the parking lot across from the Bangor Library. We will see you then!

Whenever a human appears, the layers muster up in anticipation of a snack. They're out at sunrise, regardless of the weather, and stay out most all day munching on grasses, bugs, and a supplemental non-GMO feed. Our reward is a steady flow of eggs with rich golden yolks. You can find them at Belfast Community Co-op and at Bangor Farmers Market. Winter market starts Sunday, December 3, across from the Bangor Library, 11-1. Winter market occurs the first and third Sundays of each month through April. Don't forget to stock up on chicken while you're there!

Happy National Farmers' Market Week!
(August 6-12)

Not only do the markets provide a place to find the freshest products, but they also supply rich sources of information about the food and the processes employed to grow and produce the food.

Then, there's the community factor: Local food attracts local customers who take pride in what their community offers. The local economy is strengthened by the market's presence, too.

This month, the Maine Federation of Farmers' Markets is offering you a way to share the bounty of over 50 Maine farmers' markets: Bumper Crop Buck gift certificates - for every $100 spent on the gift certificates, you get $20 more in gift certificates (https://mainefarmersmarkets.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59669e35314ed63a1cbe78088&id=ecf740a6ef&e=00eba12a04).

We are so grateful to our customers who take a moment to say "hello" even if not buying chicken. Our markets, Bangor Farmers Market , Rockland Farmers' Market , and Camden Farmers' Market, provide us with a true sense of community. Thank you so much!

Buy gift certificates to local farmers' markets in Maine! A great gift for yourself or your loved ones.

Memorial Day weekend has always seemed like the first burst of summer - parades and outdoor gatherings and school either closed or almost closed for the summer. It's a time to try new recipes for grilling and salads and those light, tropical desserts and drinks! For a Taste of Market event one year, we tried this recipe using our own chicken and homemade mayo and some of the other items from other market vendors. It just smacked of summer!

CHICKEN SEASHELL SALAD

Ingredients:

The amounts can be as varied as you like - it's a very forgiving recipe!

Marinated Common Wealth Farm chicken (1/2 - 3/4 lb. tenders, boneless breast, or boneless breast chunks)
Lemon juice and lemon zest, if desired
Olive Oil
Rosemary
Mayonnaise
Seashell macaroni (half box)
Celery (1/8 cup chopped)
Apple (cored and cut into bite-size pieces)
Cherries (can be cut or left whole)
Strawberries (from Market, if available)
Red grapes (cut in half)
Mandarin oranges (fresh or canned)
Crushed pineapple (reserve juice if using canned)
Red sweet pepper from Market if available (1/8 cup chopped)
Black pepper (1/2 tsp)

Directions:

Marinate chicken in lemon juice, olive oil and rosemary mixture hour. Add lemon zest, if desired.

Grill, bake, or pan-fry the chicken and cut into bite-size pieces.

Cook macaroni according to package directions.

Cut up veggies and fruit.

Mix reserved pineapple juice with mayo.

Toss all ingredients with the mayo mixture.

Garnish with Market fresh herbs.

Pig out!

Chicken is one of those meats that has a zillion different ways to prepare and is probably one of the best-loved meats. There is no end to the creativity of recipes! When our friend Dorothy found the instructions for making something unique with drumsticks, she made these wickedly good drumstick "lollipops." There is a little work prepping the cut and wrapping them in bacon jackets, but they can be smoked, grilled, or baked once that is done. She dipped them in her own barbecue sauce and baked a little longer. Even the most die-hard white meat lovers will fall for these!

We've been "hard at it" getting the farm and chickens ready for processing and markets.
There are tons of both little and time-consuming jobs that go into making farmers' market deadlines: maintenance, repair, ordering, paperwork/documenting, caring for meat birds and layers, sleeping, and meetings. Most of these cannot be done until there is warmer weather.

We're lucky to have the "dream team" back for another year! We always have quality product as our goal and believe raising our poultry naturally and sustainably is among our greatest assets.

Next market is Rockland Farmers' Market, Thursday, May 11, 9-1. Find us at Camden Farmers' Market, Saturday, May 13, 9-12, and Bangor Farmers Market, Sunday, May 14, 11-1:30. Email us for pre-orders:
