We are a family of five, pursuing our passion for sustainable agricultural. Alive 'n' Pickin' Farm is operated by Mike Gold and Kelly Martin, along with three children, Willow, Eliza, 'n' Jonah. We are based in the small agricultural town of Unity, ME located about 100 miles northeast of Portland and about 25 miles from the coast. We are nestled in the hills that rise above scenic Unity Pond; int

erspersed among the commonly found dairy, vegetable, and small diversified farms that preserve the rural character of the area. In recent years, the area in and around Unity has become a mecca of the local and regional foods movement. This is in part due to the presence of Unity College (Maine's environmental college) MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association), and Maine Farmland Trust who has been conducting agricultural economic development (including creating a food hub) to serve the area's farms and the greater community in general. We are proud to be finding our way back into commercial farming, as we (Kelly and Mike) have worked in farming on and off since the turn of the century including our own certified organic vegetable farm, "Crooked Row Farm" in Fort Kent, ME. In 2013, a great opportunity to grow broiler chickens for "Farmers Gate Market" in Wales, ME had us raising 200 birds in a start-up phase. By 2016, we have grown to serve additional markets including Commonwealth Poultry Co., and the Unity Food Hub, raising 1,800 broilers and 6 pigs. Thanks,
Mike, Kelly, Willow, Eliza, 'n' Jonah

This weekend we take our last three pigs to the butcher for the season. Thank you pigs, for the great family memories you've provided us and soon, the wonderful food the family will enjoy. We are very grateful for the opportunity to raise our own food.

SPRINGDALE, AR—Responding to activists’ demands that they discontinue the use of cramped pens and give their poultry space to roam freely, executives at Tyson Foods moved quickly Tuesday to assure critics that their chickens are physically incapable of walking even if they had enough room to do so.

Want to help ensure that ALL Mainers have access to farm-fresh, healthy foods? Support Maine Harvest Bucks this ! We're working with Maine Farmland Trust, the Maine Federation of Farmers' Markets, and others to expand nutrition incentives at farmers’ markets, local food retail outlets like food hubs and co-ops, and CSA farms, so that SNAP/EBT shoppers can get healthy, local food, plus bonus produce to make those limited benefits stretch a lot further.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but lately my poultry purchases at my local market have become more and more of a ‘hit-and-miss’ situation, with more ‘misses’ if I’m being honest. As I bite into my homemade chicken nuggets...
